Wouldn't good old Hoppes #9 work well? All old shooters warned me about it.

Nickel plating is commonly done over copper plating.
The best way to remove it without undue damage to the underlying steel, is by de-plating.
Any shop that does plating could probably do this for you.
The cost is likely to exceed the value of the part.

the part is costing me $15. I know it will be more than that.

Brownells sels both chemical, and electro-chemical stripping systems. I have an old S&W 32-20 that needs stripping. The electro-chemical version came highly recommended, but uses an odd 6V battery that would likely only get used once, and then sit until it was junk.....

thanks for all the advise, I ended up using vinegar to remove the plating, no underlying copper. it took about a week of soaking checking and removing loose plating.

looked into the methods that was suggested. I was not going to invest that much into something I was not going to need after this project.

now onto the browning of the same piece. :-? another week to go lol

What kind of vinegar and what strength?
Brown (apple cider) vinegar will disolve brass in normal kitchen strength.
White (distilled) vinegar is much stronger.

If by smoke pole you mean muzzleloader, when you draw file it as you fit it into the stock the nickle plating comes right off.
