View Full Version : For you 358 WIn. Fans
Yesterday I bought a near NIB steel frame BLR 358 Winchester, made in 1976. This one doesn't have a blemish on it.

I have the RCBS 200 gr. g/c bullet. I also have the Lyman 358318 HP. I don't know if the long 318' will work through the mag. or not. Any of you have experience with a 318' in the BLR ?
I own a 358 Mauser 98' bolt action, this is my first BLR in 358.
Here is the bullet ( Factory version of the 358318 in HP ) that I want to shoot in the BLR :

i bet it will ,as the 358 is loaded with 250 flgc's and sometimes heavier.
but the 250's seem to have the same profile as that boolit.

No idea but I have a hammer extension that fits a BLR made between 81-91 that doesn't fit my gun. Mine must be post 91, it's yours if you PM a mailing address. Gianni

Ben, My 318HP works fine, when loaded to the crimp groove, in my 1980 vintage BLR. I show the OAL to be 2.740" but, I've only tested a couple of times and it didn't show the accuracy of my 225 grainer that Mountain Molds cut. The 318 is usually reserved for my M.70.

Ok thanks for the load info.
My mag. is giving me some problems. The bullets ( RCBS 200 flat point ) don't want to feed up into the barrel on the 1st round, all others in the mag feed fine. The tip wants to hit low on the 1st rd out of the mag.
Mine is a 1976 gun, so finding another mag. isn't going to be very easy. My magazine looks pristine and is marked 243/308 .

I have the same gun (1976 manufacture) and I have the 358318 HP mould. Load it to the crimp groove and it will work fine in your mag. I have no feeding problems with it either.
I just haven't been able to find a load that meets my satisfaction .... yet.
I'll give the 318' a try and then report back.
Many thanks,
Ben
358318 is feeding fine now from the magazine.
The little small dimple at the end of the follower was not high enough to lift the loaded rd up and point it to the center of the chamber. A little " trial and error " trying different dimple size heights and contours and I've got the 1st round from the magazine feeding dead center of the chamber now.
I degreased the top of mag follower and JB Welded the new " lifter " in place.
This is going to be a permanent fix to my feeding problems. I tried a variety of bullet styles with this new "lifter " in place , all rounds feed 100%.
Photos of the loaded 358318 HP loaded with 20 grs. of 2400 for my 1st trip out to test the rifle. Bullets have Hornady crimp on gas checks and are sized .3582 "
Looks like I'm good to go now ! !

Glad your problem was an easy fix for your clean BLR! That HP looks a good bit larger than mine which runs .096" and also, I shortened the pin to .260" depth.
I had some promising results in my M.70 last Saturday with 23 grains IMR-4227+poly and 318HP. I'll try that load a try in my BLR too and see if it does as well. I have only experimented with 4198 and 4895 so far in the BLR and the results wasn't anything to write home about.

If you will, keep me posted with successes of the 318 hp in your BLR, if I can find an accurate load in the BLR with my 318 hp I'll also share it with you.
Best,
Ben
JDL:
My Lyman 358318 is a factory HP mold. This is what my HP pin looks like in mine :

Ben, I will let you know how the 318 fares in my BLR. I have some loaded for testing and waiting for the rain to stop, hopefully by tomorrow. I noticed while loading yesterday that the boolits for the BLR has to be seated .035" deeper than for the M.70.
Must have been an optical illusion on the size of the HP. Mine was the same, until I shortened it which made it a little easier to cast with.

I'd be very surprised if our Lyman 358318 hp's aren't some " Mean Whitetail Deer Medicine ".
I've got to start somewhere with my 358 with cast loads, guess I'll start here ? ? ?
( These loads are mild, however ...anyone trying these loads does so at their own risk )
Loads for the Browning BLR 358 Win.
Row 1 22.0 IMR 4227 358318HP Fed210 OAL - 2.744
Row 2 25.0 IMR 4198 358318HP Fed210 OAL - 2.744
Row 3 32.0 IMR 4895 358318HP Fed210 OAL - 2.744
Row 4 23.0 2400 358318HP Fed210 OAL - 2.744
I finally got to go to the range today. I took my Browning BLR , 358 Win. and my cast bullet loads with the 250 gr., Lyman 358318 HP.
I was pleasantly surprised with one of the loads. I want to shoot more of this load and " tweak " things a little to see if this group can be tightened up some.
