Hullo Troy, ok a boolit mold for the 45/70 in a TC Encore, what do you want to do? Is it for hunting, silhouette shooting, paper punching ?? If we know what you intend to do , we might give you a better answer. Lyman, RCBS, Buffalo Bullets, LBT, Ranch Dog and more make molds that are popular with different shooters, depending on what they are using the boolit for.

What kind of velocities are you looking for? do you want Plain Base or gas checked?
Give us a better clue and will be glad to offer suggestions. Regards, S.L.

Troy, You might be best served with a 300-400 gr. boolit.
Both Lyman and RCBS have both gas checked
or plain base.

I'd say the standard 405 gr FN designs.

Lyman 457193. They've been making it for over 100 years, so it "has legs." It goes about 405 gr in #2 alloy and should shoot pretty well in whatever .45-70 you put it in. I use it as my standard starting point for any new barrel/rifle in that chambering.

Lyman 457122 Gould HP 330gr. You can see some of my results from my Katadin Encore down in the Single Shot section. Those were loaded to the top of the Trapdoor level/bottom of the Marlin level loads.

I like the Lee 340 gr. and the Lee 405 gr. boolit. They both shoot very well in my Marlin 45/70.

slow elk, i plan on for now just punching paper, but will use it hunting eventually. maybe caribou, buffalo, deer, boar, squirrel(lol), etc...
i have no clue about gas checks yet. i just ordered the Lyman cast boolit book. that should help.

Hullo Troy, well it looks like most responders agree that the 405gr FN is a good place to start.
It will work for anything you might want to hunt and you will be able to work up a good hunting load while Punching that paper. If you arn't going over 1700fps the GC is not necessary IMHO. I think recoil will let you know when you have enough velocity.[smilie=1:

If you decide you want a 300-350gr boolit, you might get a GC mold, as you can push them over 2000fps if you choose to.

I like Ranch Dogs 425gr boolit , but I use it in a marlin lever. All of this is pointed at the 45/70 slugs with blunt points, you may want a semi sptz. or RN , ?? I use pointie boolits in my BPCR's for long range shooting, FP's for hunting.

Take a look at Lyman, SACO, RCBC,LEE also buffalo bullets and LBT, you will be further confused no doubt, but if you buy a Lee or Ranch Dog to start with, you arn't out much money
$18-26 , you can buy 2or3 different molds for what 1 lyman or RCBS cost. That way you find something that works for you with out investing a lot of money. These are good molds, they will drop a lot of boolits.

What ever you decide...Have fun!!

Good morning
If this is your FIRST 45-70... Encore is a light weight to caliber rifle. Me I would go with a light weight boolit. If there is a 300 grain mold... but I know Lee has that nice 340 grain. I shoot it in my 1886 (jap) 45-70 as a plinker, woods carry load. Does not Smash the shoulder even with just a cotton short sleeve shirt at 1100 fps... but still would flatten any preditor I will see in Illinois. I would up the powder and take that boolit hunting anything that weighed 400 pounds or so. If the critter could bite Iwould get it moving to 1800 fps and not worry at all.
If I wanted a little less weight I would drill the nose and soon have a 300 grain.
