I have a Rem roller in 45-70 and the front sight is a Lyman 17A. What sight + inserts is popular/good other than the 17A?

Good morning I have a simple post... I made it as thin as my beedy eye can see well. It forces me to concentrate on permits a fine alignment. I forget what sight insert I used to slim it down.

Depends on the inserts. Go to Dixie Gun Works or Buffalo Arms and look through their front sights. I liked my 17A well enough but traded up because their insert card didn't give me enough options.

It a bit spendy, but the Lee Shaver front globe with level has a good selection of inserts for most any occassion.
Check them out at www.buffaloarms.com

Shaver does good work at a reasonable price. I'm using a Soule sight from him with a Hadley eye cup and it's pretty nice considering the price difference between him and MVA. Shaver front sights are definitely worth looking at.

Lee Shaver inserts have a large selction of different inserts..........but......don't work for my old tired eyes. The wire size is too small. I bought some and they just sit in my range box.

I recently just bought some inserts from Ron Snover, and can see them a lot better. He makes them for Lyman, or MVA style, they also fit other sights which use the same inserts.

Just my $.02,
Jon

I've been using Ron Snover's inserts for about five years, and I'd be lost without them.

Hiram,

Ron Snover's sight insert cards contain only circular apertures of the 'lollipop' style. The annulus rings are 0.050" thick, and there are ten apertures ranging from 0.085" to 0.155". The cards cost $25 post paid, and Snover makes them for MVA, Shiloh Sharps and C. Sharps sights and for the Lyman 17 A / Browning sights. Contact information is:

A friend of mine recently tried calling and emailing Snover, and it took him about 10 days to 2 weeks to reach him. I'd send the guy a check.

Also Distant Thunder sells similar inserts, but he custom makes them. And they are $10 to $12.50 for each insert. But he'll give you just what you want. Here's his web address:
