This morning was beautiful, sunny mid '60sand great for shooting. I have around 3# of IMR-4227 and haven't found any caliber that really likes it much. Thought I'd give it one last shot (pun intended) this morning in my .358 M.70, which seems to favor the faster powders. I loaded up nine 358318 HP along with 23 grains and a tuft (about 1-1.25 grains) of polyester fiberfill for a test. Here is the result at 100 yds.:

All 9 shots are within 2.1" and the last 3 made the hole by the X, cutting it's right legs. I didn't chrono but, would bet it's in the nieghborhood of 1700 fps, at least that's my hope. My plan is using it on W/T deer this fall. More tests are forthcoming to really wring it out but, I'm encouraged so far!

I had really good results with 4227 in my 30-40 Krag. You might try it if you have a smaller capacity case you need to load for.

Do you have a 22 hornet? Or,a 32 hr magnum? 4227 is my favorite fuel in these 2 rounds.

4227s my favorite powder for rifles using cast boolits! 23gr behind a 180gr cast spitzer in my '06 does very well, it averages about 1.5" 10 shot groups all day long. It also does very well in my .308s and .30WCFs.

If you find you really can't stand the 4227 powder send it to me I will take real good care of it and promise to use it

What shdwlkr, oldhickory and Thumbcocker said.....

If you don't have a rifle that digests it well trade it for a usable powder to someone with a big bore magnum pistol..... Ya can't beat IMR-4227 for a great mag pistol powder...

4227 throws darts out of my 44 mag levergun. Never thought I see that accuracy out of the handgun caliber rifle. I do accept orphaned powder.

4227 kicks butt in .44 revolver.

I agree. I especially love it with 300+ grain bullets. The recoil is anything but gentle, but it seems more manageable(with full power loads) than the other powders I have used.

I have also used it with good results in a 45-70. It works also in 22 hornet as it was originally designed for that caliber.

I use it exclusively in .30 Carbine behind a 110 gr jacketed soft point! I love it, groundhogs hate it!!

It works very well with cast Boolits, good accuracy in the cold. For me 18grs 300gr rcbs swc gc, Makes my 44mag Dan Wesson into a bear thumper...

I've used 4227 for light loads with the 8mm mauser from a 18 inch Persian Carbine tube.
I was looking for .30-30 level performance with greatly reduced muzzle blast.
It worked okay but a similar light load using 4198 worked somewhat better. These were with 160 grain jacketed soft points, the load data I'd found suggested 170 gr bullets but none were available at the time.
Velocities were around 2200-2400 fps, higher than you'd want to push a cast bullet.

I gave my remaing 4227 and 4198 to a young friend who'd just started handloading for the No.5 .303 carbine, he also reported great results, excellent accuracy and greatly reduced muzzle blast, using 180 gr projectiles.

PS
I recently aquired a cherry Savage 23B in 25-20 so I'll be using both 4227 and 4198 again when I start reloading for this small case round.

And speaking of 4198, Bartlett's has a russian powder that is of approximately the same burn rate.

+1 on 44mag. It is the most accurate powder for me at mid range velocities.

Hmmmm...let's see: how 'bout .357 Mag, .41 Mag, .44 Mag, .22 Hornet, .30-30, .45-70. Also works really well for case-forming loads...like .284 Win to 7.5x44 Swiss or .30-06 to 7.65x53 Argentine.

In doses of about 20 to 22 gn it will produce some fine groups with boolits in the 170 to 200gn range in 30/06 size cases.
It is one of the best for smokin hot loads in the 45/70 with lighter boolits 300 to 350gn.
One of my most favorite powders for the 22 hornet. If it wont shoot a 45gn boolit with 8.5gn well I give up hope for the rifle.
Theres a few things for ya.

Send me a pound of it and I will test it for you, just to make sure it isn't defective:bigsmyl2:
20gr. in a 30/06 with a LBT 180 LFN shoots great
16gr. in a 7-08 with a lee 135 gives acceptable groups
In a hornet its gravy
A 45/70 is my garbage disposal, it will gobble up just about anything, and shoot it well.
