View Full Version : Anyone tried paper patching for the 6.5x55 Swede

Just wondering I was thinking about getting a mould for my 6.5 Swede and wondered how well paper patching would work for it compared to just using lubed gas checked bullets.

Might have to give this some more thought as I was hopeing Lee had a mould evidently they discontinued it at least at this time. I can buy quite a few already cast lubed and gas checked bullets for what a lyman mould block cost.

Might just have to keep my eyes open for a used mould at the gun shows and online.

From my experience, it will work as well, or better. I am outperforming my jacketeds with identical paper loads.
Perhaps Buckshot can cut an aluminum mold for the 6.5. I use standard cast load molds. I like the gas check feature. I wrap it without a gas check. I am thinking the paper in place of the gas check helps the load.

Should work. Just use .257 boolits.

Would 257 bullets be too undersized?

Depends on how big the Swede is. I suspect that if you cut most of the way through the layer of paper next to the boolit, it will shred OK. Never tried it, and don't own a 25 mold, so I could be full of condensed apple pie. If the boolit is a sloppy fit in the bore, it might be a problem. The same trick "might" work using a 6.5 boolit in a .270. Hmmm.

Did some further checking. I can't find anything with a long full diameter body, and the nose would be too small. Bad idea.

Yea I kinda figured the only way to go is to size down a 6.5 bullet and use then patch it. I wonder if you sized a lubed bullet down through a sizer then patched it lubed the paper then sized it again if that would work ok.

Hopefully docone31 will post here again, but IIRC he sizes the boolit using dish soap (it just Dawned on me), washes and dries it, applies the patch, and after that I forget. I suspect the last steps are a very light application of JPW, or something, and then the final sizing. His results are enviable.

Also search for posts by Montana Charlie, and Baron von Trollwack.

PP for the Swede works fine. Either size down a 6.5mm boolit or use a as cast 25 caliber boolit. I use a 0.259" Lee push thru die for mine as well as some plain base 25 cal. boolits I shoot in various rifles.
