I have a 311291 mould. I have a BUNCH of bullets that are already to go with gas checks. They run 11 to 14 BHN hardness and they were loaded to about 1600 fps.
I have tried them as is but they are not shooting good. My rifle is a Marlin 336 Microgroove. At 25 yards they shoot good. At 50 yards they are about 1" to 1.5" groups. At 100 yards they are going about 6" and this won't work. I have been pping for my ML for a couple of years and would like to try it in this 30-30.
I don't have a sizer. What I was thinking about doing was sizing to get the GC on then wrapping them then sizing them paper on to .311 would this work? Thanks Ron

thats how i do it for my 1956 336 30-30 except no gas check , the paper jacket takes care of the gas cutting.

Do I need a die to open the mouth up more for the PP bullet? Ron

You MAY need to bell the case mouths, for the PP bullet. I have gotten away without doing this, many times. However, often there will be a small corner or fold of paper at the base, which sticks out a bit on a patched bullet. In that circumstance, there is always a risk of cutting or damaging the patch, as the bullet is seated. I think that the best answer would therefore be....yes....it would be best to put a SLIGHT flare on the case mouths. Only a slight flare, as, if your patches are tight (as they should be), this will suffice to ensure that the bullet can be seated without tearing or cutting the patch. Ultimately you'll need to decide for yourself,if this step is really necessary. I manually flare my cases, using a set of needle-nose pliers (with the right profile)....then, after the bullet is seated, I use a Lee Factory Crimp Die to straighten the case mouth. Just straighten, to get rid of the flare - NOT crimp, mind you.

I ordered the Lee die to flair the mouth of the cases. I will let you all know how it goes. Thanks for the help. Ron

You might look in Paul Matthew's book - The Paper Jacket. I dimmly recall some discussion of .30-30 and Microgroove issues.

Idahoron, I don't use my lee die to flair the mouth. I push the PP boolit into the fired unsized case. I then use my neck sizer die( without the primer pin installed) to squeeze the neck around the PP boolit. The factory crimp die would do the same(but I don't have one)
