Does anyone know, were a person can still buy any surplus powder. I went into a gun store yesterday, and kind of out of the way was a 8lb keg of Old Unique powder in the cardboard kegs! I use a lot of Unique (or Did) There seem to be some kid of water stain on the keg, but not real dark! So i ask how much, and the clerke said they we selling it for a friend, so he got his adding machine out, and Kit me at $129.00!
i thought that was a little high for 25 year old powder, was I right or wrong?

What your thoughts?

... i thought that was a little high for 25 year old powder, was I right or wrong?...

Way too high considering.
I might offer them $50, if I was in a real good mood.
Otherwise, fresh, new Unique sells for about that price.
I bought a 4# jug for $60+tax about a month ago.

You were right. I was at our local shop and looking at CCI primers. Only 2 boxes. But they looked like they had been in water. They were not willing to go down on price so I passed.

If I would of been totaly out of powder, I might of offered $80.00 tops.
But If primers stay as high as thet are right now, If I live to be a 100 years old, I will still have powder! I don't rifle shoot except 38 and 45lc, and i load them powder puff loads. hopefully I will come across some surplus! I have 4lbs of Winchester 540, I need to find way to use it! I would love to trade it for Accurate #2, I love that powder.
If anyone runs across any surplus powder, please let me know!
Thanks greg

RayinNH Thank you!
I have been reloading for 32 years, and have dealt with at least 50 gun stores and I never had a problem with any of them exceot this store and they rip me off every time I buy something there! You would think I would learn:roll::roll:
For some reason, the midwest seems to be high on everything except wages!
Thanks you a bunch!

gcollins, as you might know, HS-6 is simply relabeled W540. So any load data you find for HS-6 is directly usable with W540.

Greg, You may want to look at the powder called "Russian Unique" (Pat's Reloading, Jeff Bartlett, maybe Hi Tech as well). WC 820, which comes in several burn rates (AA #7 -> H 110) may be worth considering as well.

Greg, you'll like the 453, a fine grain powder that meters easily...Ray

I wouldnt pay more the 50 bucks for it and would only pay that if he let me open and smell it to see if it seemed ok still.

This place is a rip off joint! I need a shell holder for my Lee Hand primer, the little flat shell holder, not one for a press, i had been buying them for $1.99, they charged me $7.95! but as high as gas is, I couldn't afford to drive another 70 miles so i paid it!

Hi gc,

I have used the HS-6 at 6.0 grains in the .32-20 ruger blackhawk under a 122 grain boolit. The HS-6 is around the same as Win 540 but maybe a little slower. That 540 was the best for making the 3-1/4 dram X 1-1/4 oz. 12 gauge loads.

HI,
Unless I am mistaken I think all the surplus WC820 & RUSSIAN UNIQUE is gone.
It was the last I had time to check.
I do not know if there is any other powders out there (surplus) as good as those 2 are in revolvers.:(:(
If there are let me know as my son needs some.
Are there any real good surplus powders out there for 9mm, 40, & 45acp. ?
The kids all have the fancy auto-loaders, not me.

What kind of burn rate is Scot 453? What kind of loads is good with this powder?

What do you load with Scot 453? Where does the powder burn rate fall? Clean burning? etc, etc...

[sorry about the double post; the page froze up and I thought I lost it all...]

dougader, it's in the neighborhood of Green Dot and Win 231. The data that was provided to me by the ballistician at Accurate covers reloading for the following cartridges: .38 Spl., .38 Spl+P, 9MM, .357 Mag., .45ACP, .40 S&W, .38 Super, .380 ACP, .44 Mag.

Is it clean? I've never been one to worry about how clean burning a powder is. If the powder is reasonably priced I buy it then clean my guns afterwards. I will say this, it's cleaner than black powder :-D...Ray
