I know we all believe in cast bullets, but recently I got thinking about this lead free hunting idea floating around. I was thinking of what to do for my 444. The thought came as to how I could turn some bullets from copper on my lathe. Then I started thinking about all the bad mouthing our big bores get because of bullet density ect ect. The idea came to me to make a bullet like a football shape to help stabilize for maybe longer distance. I am sure I am nuts, but having a few experts tell me so would help me forget this.

OK, yer nuts. BTW Walt Melander has a 45 cal mold design just like that.

anything is worth a shot !!!! you never know what would become of it, it would essentially be a modified Boat tail bullet. if you do it, I would start a slow work up and see what happens.

:kidding:Hey if we shape one perfectly round like a baseball that should be really stable in flight as well!:kidding:

I know, I know that was bad. sorry

I was thinking of a hollow point round ball!:bigsmyl2:

Might work the only thing you can do is try and see. Here's my nutty ideal make a round ball and put dent on it like a golf ball. On a gb the dents make a neg air flow around the ball the make it fly farther and straighter I think it might work on a round lead ball to[smilie=f:

Some of you guys need help. I know, me too - and I'm not gettin any!

The latest theory I've seen in fluid dynamics is to add little golf ball style "dents" all over the surface to increase "slipperyness" relative to the fluid medium being transversed. Anybody want to try that one on Boolits?

BD,
You're nuts, too. :-D I thought about that. The problems might be the rotation, and the ball being flat on one side. Now, in a smoothbore, a patch might protect the ball enough, but why bother? Accuracy and wind sensitivity would still be the largest variables affecting groups and POI, not trajectory.

i would put a flat point on it so you know which way to load them.

If this works, I'm going to start a new sport........field goal shooting.[smilie=1:

Once you have a load worked up, turn the bullet around and try it.

I keep wanting to find a Davenport somewhere that I can set up to automatically turn wide meplat brass/copper bullets.

Unfortunately, I have neither the $$$, the training nor the place to put one. I know it can be done, I just can't do it... so somebody else will have to make all the money. :(

The concept works fairly well with potatos in a 1 1/2 in. smooth bore. I think you're onto something here.

Cast up a bunch of them and send them to some of us for testing. I could sure use about 200 lbs. of them cast from WW alloy. [smilie=1:

With such a design, would there be enough bearing surface to align the bullet?
