Good afternoon
Has anyone tried or is using a long .375 Winchester 1-12 twist Barrel on a BPCR ?
I was reading this morning somewhere else and the thought poped up.. WHY NOT ? That fast twist would /should stabalise 300 Grainers at the slow velocity Black produces.
Any body have any feed back or idea ?

The faster twist will also cause more fouling problems. Otherwise, I think your reasoning is correct. The 38-55 has been a good caliber for 300 yard matches. I'd suspect it might not compete real well with the 45s at longer ranges, Though I don't know, just what I've heard.

Greetings leftiye...
yea .... fouling might be a problem. I guess the thing to do is fire some 3F loads out of my Winny 94 and see how bad things get with 3 , 5 , and 10 rounds. It would be a bother to have to wipe between shots. I would not mind every 5..

They're using 1-12" twist .38 barrels in BPCR for bullets up to 365 gr and have been for some time. Some use a .375" bore, while others use a more 38-55'ish bore of .376-7". Several barrel makers can furnish them.

THanks McLintock ! I receiveed a PM from a shooter and he stated as long as the fouling can be kept soft (added a G Cooky) , he has no problem shooting 10 shot strings with Black.
Looks like my old ratty Roller is going to get rejuvinated !

Some guys are using the 38's at a 1000. They are going to 38-72s etc to get the range. I have used my 38-55 with a 15 twist out to 600yd fairly accurately.

Yeah, I think they almost outlawed the .38's in 1000 yard shooting due to the steep angles the bullets were coming in at (safety issue in the bunkers), but with the 38-72 chambering and a couple others (38-56 Win) they got the velocity up with the heavy bullets and now they may be permitted.

There was an article in Black Powder Cartridge news where they used 2 target frames and measured the angle of arrival and found the big capacity 38 cases and heavy boolits were shooting flatter and actually carrying more energy than the big 45s at a 1000yds.
The point was to get the 38s approved for use at that distance.

Thanks Boz330 That would make sense... a longer narrower boolit would be less air resitent. I am going to have to look into some of the old 38īs cases.

M5155,

I have been shooting a 38-90WCF the past two years in a re-barreled Shiloh Sharps. I can get over 1600fps with 777 or Swiss 1 1/2. Steve Brooks made me a 380gr mould, and I expand the 9,3x74R up .009" and I have cases. The germans just took the old 38-90 and necked it down a little to come up with the 9,3x74R case. CH4D makes dies (9,5x74R) and there are lots of good designs out there. It is going to get my Bison this fall.
