Well I finally managed to wade through the snow and get out to the range, and discovered that 53.5 grains of reloader 7 makes me very happy.

The rifle- Ruger #1 stainless tropical
The load-
hoch paper patch 330gr out of adjustable mould .406 diameter
powder-reloader 7...53.5gr
Alloy- approx 20-1
paper- bienfang tracing paper... 2 wraps... .412 patched bullet diameter
Lube-rooster labs liquid jacket
Primer- federal 215 magnum
Brass- Hornady from the 50rd boxes
Average velocity- 2420fps 8ft from muzzel at 100yds 2109fps

The rifle was a 40th birthday present to myself (being selfish I guess)and has not seen a single jacketed bullet from my hands just that wonderful lead alloy that we all love. The cartridges were assembled in a combination of hornady and CH-4D large neck size die with the .434 diameter insert. Overall length loaded round 3.087 which has the paper just engraved by the rifling I have found this to be the most accurate with the bullet just started. Recoil is stout but managable from bench and with a 22fps extreme spread for 10 rds and a standard deviation of 7.41 I am pleased.
When loading the bullet I have found that with the .410 inside diameter of the neck a very small amount of imperial sizing die wax on the base really eases the entry of the bullet without distortion...I would not use this load in anything but the #1!! even though I show very little sign of pressure it is again a stout load!!

The target is todays complete with flyers and bad technique 6 into one 4 outside.

I like it!!! Last year I had Red River Rick make me two molds like that, a 50 and a 45 cal.
Maybe God willing this year will see a 40. I know my rifle will handle your load, its on one of the older b-78 Brownings. I had MM Dan make a 410gn LFN for it and now have taken three moose with it. My working load gets right at 2000 fps with the 410gn boolit.
Kills moose dead. Would like to try some PP like yours in it, some day.

Thanks for the feedback, the #1 is well worth the price of admission and the 405 is right up there with the 45-70 for versatility and powder/bullet selection is great. The hornady brass has given great service, just over 10 reloads so far with no problems. The next bullet is going to be around 400gr paper patch for walking the salmon creeks for big bears... 2000fps with luck and safety........ a poor mans .450-.400

Well Cast405....
You buying that Ruger #1 in .405 for your 40th birthday present to yourself gave me an idea...[smilie=1:
So I ordered one yesterday being that I turned 62 today.....Actually I have been wanting one of these rifles since they first came out...
I have several NEI molds that came with a used 40-90SS I bought a few years ago.... Do you know the groove and bore dia. of you .405?...I would like to order a push-thru sizer from Buckshot to size my boolits down to paper patch up before the rifle gets here... :drinks:
Thanks,
Mike
