Does the Lyman formula "To make 10 pounds of #2 Alloy, use either of the following recipes: 9 pounds of wheelweights + 1 pound of 50/50 (lead/tin) bar solder" really give you #2 Alloy? I don't have any 50/50 bar solder but if I take 9 pounds of wheel weights, 1/2 pound of stick on wheel weights which is supposedly pure lead and 1/2 pound 95/5 (tin/antimony) solder and mix together will it give me #2 Alloy?

since the newer ww's usually contain about .5% tin and about 3 or 4% antimony, and about .25to.40% arsenic.
you wil have to do the math. in the olden days 70's to earlyish 80's the formula worked nice as the ww's had 4+ % antimony up to 7 and even 9% was common in car and large truck ww's before the mid 80's
i had some truck ww's from the early 60's that were stinking hard ,i thought they were zinc when i first did the scrape test.

I should really keep better track. I add 2lbs. of linotype to the range lead to allow it to be hardened. This is a LEE 4/20 pot. I've never been able to get 20lbs of lead into the pot. Won't hold it.

I've gotten 20lbs in mine but it is above the top of the pot - ya know, suface tension - like filling a glass full of water and then a few more drops and watching it rise above the rim?

18lbs is absolutely the most I can get in mine and still get a stirring "spoon" in.

I forgot to take into consideration that there is the 1/2" or slightly more of leftover metal in the bottom of the pot. So it is more than the 14 lbs I can get in. No way for a total of 20 lbs. though.

The wheel weight /solder formula is a good mix, I used it for many years after finding 200 lbs of solder in a bin in a scrap yard.
