I would like to get some scope recommendations for my Ruger SBH Hunter in 44 mag. I think I would like to go with a fixed power scope. I have been looking at the Leupold FX-II 4x28 but 300-350 for a scope right now is a stretch for me right now. Does anyone have experience with any other brand handgun scopes that may be a little less money? I have looked at a few others but I don’t know if they will stand up to stout recoil.

http://www.ultradotwest.com/ultradot_2008_006.htm is what I put on my 44 mag. I haven't had a chance to shoot more than a hundred rounds or so but so far I love it. This scope is supposed to handle the recoil of the 44 plus. Be careful, some scopes just won't handle the recoil of the 44.

I used to use Swift brand pistol scopes. For $150, and a lifetime free replacement warranty, they were hard to beat.

Used on on a 5" 629 for a few years, and had no issues. And I had even sent a few boxes of 300gr buffalo bore loadings down range. Unfortunately, the scope and I parted ways some years ago.

I find anything above a 2X magnifies the wigglies too much for off hand shooting. I hate to say it, but check out Evil-Bay for a while. My 2X Leupold was 150$, and was still in the cellophane.

I ate a Swift on my .475 before even getting it sighted in. The replacement now resides on a Mark II.

Bullseye shooters have been mounting Ultradots on the slide of 1911's. They hold up great.
I have two on revolvers and one on a 22. No problems.

My aimpoint came apart during this past deer season. I'd put it on a mossberg to adapt to the NY southern zone shotguns only rule. It was about 6 years old and had been on several .44s and one a bullseye pistol for about a year. It's back at Larry's now, I'll let you know how the lifetime warrantee works out.

I also own a 2x leupold. I never had an issue with it, but I really only use it for load work up as I prefer the Ultra Dot to hunt with If I'm using optics, (which is more and more as I get older).

Nikon pistol scopes are high quality, tough and more affordable than
L-scopes. MidSouth has the Nikon Monarch 2X for $200. Look at my avatar
and see mine on a S&W629. ;)

My nephew had a Simmons on a .30-06. Opening morning of deer season, he had a 75 yard shot at an enormous whitetail. First shot missed. Buck ran 25 yards towards him and stopped. Second shot missed. Buck turned around ran out to 250 yards and stopped again. Third shot missed. Later we checked the scope and it was 12" high at 50 yards. Tried to zero it and it wouldn't hold zero for more than two shots.

That was one of the most expensive scopes I ever saw.

Look around for a used Leupold M8 in good condition. Had one on an SSK Contender in 7JDJ #2. Gun ate two Simmons and a Tasco before I hung a 4X M8 on it. That same Leupold was still mounted on the barrel when I sold it five years and several thousand rounds later. Have another M8 on a 10" .357 TC barrel; that one is over 15 years old and hasn't been out of the mounts since it was installed.

I have had good luck with burris- one is on a 7mm-08 encore barrel and the other is on a 223 encore barrel- both are 15in pistol barrels. They have a great warranty, and I thought they were American made to boot- but I'm not sure if thats still true.

Thanks everyone. I have never had a red dot but i am going to give it a shot. I am going to order the Ultradot 25mm (1") because it looks like the 30mm even if I get new rings they will be to close together.

I have used bushnells trophy handgun scopes on...44 mag,338JDJ#2 TC,.308 win in a Competitor pistol,270 win Competitor pistol, and a 3030 tc. NO TROUBLE with heavy shooting.
On a Ruger SBH 44 mag it has been just fine.
I didnt care for the red dots, I am just old fashion I guess. FWIW....Buck

I too have used Bushnell Trophy over the years two or three and on some hard kickers such as 44, 454, and 475 with no problem, I much prefer just a plain old 2 power fixed myself, I had a 2x6 once that was a good accurate scope but found the critical eye relief too much of a pita to use.
