Handsome! I would love to have one of these. I understand that there was a history of sheared forend screws and also that the dovetail that the screw threads into was not up to the stress of .358 recoil. There must be some creative ways of dealing with the problem.

Yup, glass bed it. Fixes some of the wandering zero too.

That is one crazy price. I had a chance to buy one 5 years ago for $500.

Anyone have one for less? I would like to get an older, ie 1959 or older 99 or 88 winchester levergun(curio and relic) and like the schnabel, but won't complain too much for another version.

I can't seem to find a decent bore 1894 octagon barrel like I had hoped....

Still can... Kiwi dollars are trading for U.S dollars at pretty much a 2:1 rate... ;)

Any Savage 99 or Win 88 in 358 is NOT going to qualify as a Curio and Relic for the BATFE.

Why is that? I am 99% sure they made Savage 358's before 1959, maybe not win 88's.......... I have seen 99's advertised as early as 1954 , I believe.

Couldn't you feel each shot in a .358, making a cartridge counter useless??

I bought mine for $300 US but let it go -- I liked it well enough but it just really did not suit me-- I know I am nuts --but in my defense I have a custom 2" Weatherbye Vanguard .358 and an 18.5" ruger M-77 358--so i am not totally nuts-- my advice go for it -- since the muzzle is light it will jump when you bench it

Interesting thing about prices. I waited too long to check a local dealer, but once I got my C&R and piled up some cash the store said I missed an excellent 99 in 358, dies, some ammo for $350, and this is in California..

Point is, IMHO people can ask anything they feel they want, especially on free websites, and they troll for buyers. I suspect that gun for 1k may be there a good while, then again someone may buy it w/o any fret. I believe a decent 99 is worth $350-$600, calibers like 358 and 250-3000 are worth more as they are more rare. Savage only websites seem to pump up the price some, and I suspect since many buy at garage sales and from individuals, they appreciate that internet prices are inflated over what they have to buy them for. I see a $1500 Savage and guys post" great deal from a great guy", Etc. They wouldn't buy it at that price, but someone reading it feels they must know what it is worth, since they have 15000 posts, and bottom line some yahoo buys it at the inflated price.

I'll wait for an honest price for both seller and buyer ( me) and let the unsuspecting guy pay $1500 for a $500 gun..... JMHO, nothing more or less.

I had a guy tell me his 94 round barrel gun was a STEAL at $1000, put it on gunbroker and never sold it or got a bid starting at $700..... Not calling him wrong, but the market is what it is, especially on internet sales of old, used guns with Patina, etc.

The 358 was introduced in 1955. Murray says the first 358's came out in '56.

I misinterpreted what you were saying as far as C+R goes. My bad. Happens more often as I get older.

Yeah, but some folks like to know how many they put in the mag. Same thing on all those Glock and 1911 mags. Why bother putting numbers on them? 'Cuz folks lose count sometimes.

You guys had better shoot one before going overboard on it. My '99 in 358 was a killer on boath ends! The Winny '88 has the same reputation. Too much drop at comb on the stock, or so I'am told. Good Luck..!!

fwiw; the two I sold in the last 6 months both brought me more than 1500 NZ dollars, and they were the "Brush guns"which are expected to sell for less than the 99-A..( face to face sales,no cut for the auctioneers)..

You got that right. My 88 in .358 has shot itself out of 3 stocks. I finally had the last one repaired with fiberglass cloth in the magazine well and that has held. They do kick with factory 250's. I like cast at about 1500-1600 fps for comfort and accuracy. Lyman 3589 is about the best.

check out the pic in my profile. I built this 358 win on an 1895 win action with a douglas 1-16 twist barrel. Note the stock profile. It took some tinkeing ,as soon as you throw her to your shoulder your looking straight down the sights. This is the nicest shootinh 358 I own

Bret is right. In 1956, I had to choose between a Savage 99 in the then new .358, and a newly discontinued Win 71 in .348. Glad I made the right choice and bought the 71 Deluxe.
If memory serves, I paid about $135. I was 16yrs. old at the time, making about $50 per wk., and every week, I'd go to the gun shop and lay down $10. The owner would take the gun down off the rack, and let me handle it for a while. This went on every week, until I paid it off.
Needless to say, this will be the last gun I ever trade off!!!
