In deep

I picked up an Ohaus 45500R .458 500RN mold a while back, it makes nice bullets for the .458 Win and now I am looking at it for the 45-70 Marlin. Only problem is how much bullet I have to sink into the case to get it to function in the Marlin. the bullet is 1.381 OAL and I only can have about .430 showing out of the top for good function. Never been this deep where the bullet is taking nearly half the case capacity. I find lots of data in my manuals but lever 45-70s stay with 405 grain and down. Anybody running big deep seated slugs like this through a Marlin 1895?

Leadeye im using a 500 gr flatnose bullet in a 1895 45-70 guide gun with 38 grs of 3031 without any problems has a pretty good kick but is dead accurate at 100 yds

I use both the 500 rcbs and the 540 wfngc ballistic cast in 4570s they work fine.

The big Kabooms at the muzzle end are what it is about, it's the ones closer to my face that worry me.:-D

Yeah that happened to me this past deer season with my Mod 66 in 44-40. I got re-educated as to how well the 66 fires with an open bolt. I am just glad I was wearing my glasses that day or I would have had more than just a few cuts and powder burns on my face. The blasts are definitely suppose to be at the muzzle and not the breach.

Lloyd Smale, what kind of load are you using with the RCBS 45-500. I have a Marlin 1895 that I want to load for. What is your alloy, powder etc.

Ya , Leadeye, I hear you loud and clear on the KaBoom in the face, been there done that and it ain't no fun. I had what the NRA called a case head failure, the case head split down through the primer pocket and blew up the action on a 98 Mauser in 300 winnie. I was lucky, had on my shooting glasses, saved my eyes, but still got lots of shratnel. Makes you flinch a little to.

I don't use anything larger than 425 gr. in my 45/70's so I can not really say anything about 500 and above, can't see much reason for them in a lever gun, I tried one that I was shooting in a Sharps one time , 485 gr. I had to modify a mold for it and blunt the nose so I still had powder capacity that I wanted. So I use a liter boolit.
