Just bought a Remington Model 11. Paid 60 bucks for it. 60 bucks people! Here's the deal: I need a butt stock and the barrel will need to be cut back to about 18.5 in. It has a wicked dent in it right at the 20 in. mark. It is filthy as heck and has a good patina of rust over its entire surface. It's old. The owner inherited it from his father in law who killed thousands of birds with it. I will post pics tomorrow. Any Mod 11 buttstocks floating around out there? Let me know.

I have several Mod. 11's and love everyone of them. The best place to go for replacement wood is boydsgunstocks.com. For the money spent, I don't believe you can get better wood. I have ordered 3 replacements from them and all three have arrived with figure in the buttstock.

One word of caution, when shooting your Mod. 11, ensure that the forearm grip cap does not loosen up during firing. Everyone of my 11's is or was missing the detent ball in the forearm, and if you fire the gun on a loose forearm is will crack/break/shatter the forearm. Thats why you see so many of the 11's, A-5, and Savage 720's with cracked forearms.

Enjoy your new shotgun.

Everett

Question: When you shorten a barrel like that, can (if you so choose) get it threaded for standard choke tubes, or is the diameter of the new bore a little bigger, requiring something special? I have come across a couple of old Remington autos (one a nice 11-48 in 16 ga) and they've got old 30 inch full-choke barrels. The price is right, but my thought would be to shorten the barrels to 26 or even 24 inches, and fitted for choke tubes. purpose would be mostly for upland hunting.

EMC45-
If you don't care what it looks like, the cheap Ramline synthetics for an Auto 5 will fit. At least they fit my old one (swapped off about 15 years ago). I had to do a little judicious relieving with a dremel on the forend, but the buttstock fit right from jumpstreet.

You might try Numrich Gun Parts Corp. in West Hurley, NY 12491 - They have many parts for obsolete guns. I've bought of them many times and was never dissatisfied.

Checked Fleabay and GunBroker, nothing in my price range. Brownells has a stock from Wood plus for 37 after my discount. Not bad. I want it to match the front though. The front forend is in good shape, but it is old of course. Have thought about the Ramline too. If I like the price that is. Still debating on the choke thing for this gun. Have thought about leaving it at 18.5 and having cyl. bore, but also thought that RemChokes would be super cool! Or even an old Cutts Comp choke. This thing is gonna have to get sanded like crazy and then I am still uncertain of the finish I want. This will be a beater so a foot deep bluing job is not necessary. I would like Parked or dull blue. Don't want to bake it nor do I want to epoxy paint it. Any suggestions?

Here are some pics. I forgot to mention the bolt spring tube has been brazed onto the tang. The guy said his FIL shot this like that for decades!

Nice old shotty. I like the Poly Choke myself.

I'd check with some one about popping (pounding) that dent out before I cut the barrel. It's not that expensive if you can find a 'smith with a dent raiser.

That big old brick of a gun that you have is a bit of a shoulder slapper, but it's also one of the most reliable autoloading shotguns ever built. $60 is cheap, even in beaten up condition. As was already said, the barrel can be pushed back out if you find a smith with the right tool. That gun is basically a Browing A5 that was made under license by Remington.

You need to see if you can find a manual for that thing. There is some gizmo under the forearm wood that goes together different ways depending on what loads you are shooting out of it. I don't remember all the details, but there is something in there that you need to flip over or reverse the order of or something.

By the way, the workings of that thing bear no resemblance to the Remington 1100. The 1100 is gas operated. The 11 has a barrel that moves back in the receiver when fired. It's a spring gun.

The Mod 11 does pack a punch! I have fired one before and wanted one since. You can hear all the springs moving like crazy inside it when you shoot. I know there are gunsmiths that can raise the dent, but it is more like 3 dents inside. I have plenty of barrel to work with so off it goes!

there is a friction ring that slides on the magazine tube that is adjustable
by flipping the steel spring bushing
one side is flat the other is tapered

EMC45; nice shotgun you got there! Seeing the safety located inside the guard tells me it was made before 1929, mine was manufactured in 1916 and the BIL was made in 1915. I paid 75.00 for mine years ago, it is 26 inch IC with intregal rib. Enjoy! Scot

Just lopped the barrel off to 18.5 inches and scrubbed the entire thing with 0 Steel wool and Kroil. Tore it down to pins and springs! This thing was filthy! I took pics as I went and will post them asap. I am about to order the Ram Line stock set form Cabela's.

Some pics. I sweated the old sight on the cut down barrel, but it came off after emptying the mag. I used the old solder on the sight so it wasn't enough.

This gun hadn't been fired in over 30 years!! I shot it today and it fired perfectly (other than sending the recycled front sight out into orbit!) Fired about 15 rounds of birdshot and one slug. The birdshot softened me up for the slug. All of them hurt.

Got my Mod. 11 Rem. fifty years ago. Still love it. Even if the left side locking bolt retaining rail is broken (like mine) you can safely shoot it since it can't get out. Many were broken from a steady diet of baby mags in the late fiftys, early sixtys when many 11's were still pounding those hard to kill Mallards. Even super-x in 1 1/4 oz. isn't particulary good for it. I have shot many though in my younger years. That may be why my bolt rail is broken!!! When the Rem 11 was designed the heavy load for it was 1 1/8 oz. shot. I believe the "heavy super-x 1 1/4" load came out in 1924. Mine was purchased new in 1919, so of course, it has the safety in front of the trigger. I'm a lefty so it worked out great for me. I always keep the cup ring turned with the cup end toward the friction piece with the barrel squeezing the other end of the friction piece. Even then I only shoot 1 1/8 oz. shot over 19.5 gr. Green dot (one of my favorite powders). If the fiber cushion is missing inside the receiver rear, email your address to me and I'll mail you a new one, no charge. Depreacher ps. DON'T grease the magazine tube. Try it clean and dry first. Use only a super light coating of gun oil if need be. A lot depends on the condition of your brass friction ring. Be sure it has the steel ring that goes around it. Good luck.

I took a pic of what I have. One ring with brass insert, but no other ring. What do I need? I would like to shoot slugs through this.

Also another update with the stock...........I will try to scab a piece of hardwood with epoxy (slow set) in the wrist area with 2 pins (threaded rod) and stabilize the linear crack through the wrist with a couple of cross pins and epoxy. Then I have to re-contour/inlet the wrist socket piece where it mates to the receiver. Will also sweat another ramp/bead sight to the barrel again. I am thinking of threading the ramp so I can use a hex set screw and adjust my elevation for slugs.

Nice project gun. I guess if it were me I would go with the ram line stock, parkerize the gun, drill and tap the top of the receiver then add a heads up display type sight. Remember to put a light coat of epoxy between the scope mount and receiver before you tighten the screws down for the last time.

I actually ordered the Ramline set and they don't fit! That is why I am repairing my stock. One reason is I am cheap, another is that a lot of the things we buy or pay to get fixed we could do ourselves with some thought and patience.

you are defently are missing the second ring that goes between the spring and the brass friction fingers

right now the 11 is set up to shoot lite loads

don't shoot anything heavy with this set this way[including slugs]

the second ring looks like the lug on the barrel

has the same taper only its about 3/8'' long

Update on the Rem 11. I fitted a stock (Brownells) and am getting ready to Tru Oil it. It was a job and I lost blood on this project. I have a good bit of pics coming. I do have a question though. How old is this old gun? The first three digits of the Ser. # are 182. Can't find anything on line. Any help will be appreciated.
