I think almost everyone is familiar with the weight lifting dumb bells with a plastic shell. I remember seeing one broken casing but the core looked like concrete. Does anyone know if that is concrete or a lead material I can melt?

Its probably concrete. Eye up the 20 pound weight and see if there is any chance it can fit in a 20 pound furnace. I doubt it.

Every one I’ve seen is cement. Look for the "plug" where they poured it full.

I remember the cheap weights as being concrete.

Same here. I've got a bunch of them from many sources and times purchased. Any of them that have cracked have been full of concrete.

I just got rid of a few hundred pounds of those concrete ones, my garbage men are not happy.

All the plastic covered ones I've seen are full of concrete.

Look at the size of one compared to a old school Hollywood brand cast Iron one.
They're a lot bigger than the more dense Iron ones of the same weight.
A cast Lead one would be even smaller than the Iron ones.

You're looking for the wrong kind of weights. You don't want gym type weights, which are iron if they're good, or cement if they're cheap, what you need are diver's weights. Those are (usually) lead.

Lead wouldn't well for weight lifting. Weights get dropped and such and would get deformed.

A 10 lbs lead weight would probably be smaller than the size of a pop can. The 10 lbs plastic shell hand weights would generally be concrete.
