A friend ran across a 300 Savage at his clubs trade day yesterday for $300 but he wasn't sure exactly what it was. He wasn't interested because of the cartridge so he didn't look real close at it.
My questions are; did anyone else but Savage chamber a no hammer lever gun in this cailber? And when did Savage stop chambering their 99 in it?
If this is a 99 then this sounds like a he!! of a good price and I'm going to jump on it. Advice and thoughts are very much encouraged.

Got an update. It is a 99 for sure and has a Unertl Hawk 4X scope, but the price was $500 not $300. The blue is rubbed off the barrel in one spot from time in a leather case. Still sounds like a pretty good deal but not as good as $300.

Thanks
Bob

For $500, that's probably an OK deal, depending on condition. I don't know of anyone else chambering a lever gun for 300 Sav, although several bolt guns were made.

I bought mine for about that several years ago and have been very happy with it; happy enough that I really want another in 250-3000 Savage. But those are pricey.

They are nice, about a nickel's worth of difference from a .308, just a shorter neck. My M99 was about $400 but had no scope. I later paid $100 for a Lyman aperture receiver sight for it so I guess it breaks out the same. (This tells me also that if you ever have to sell your guns, sell the receiver sights separately, because on the gun they don't get any premium price.)

Don't worry about it being a 300 Sav. Some of the loads that have shot have locked up bolt action 308's. Depending on the manufacture of brass will determine which case holds more powder, a Winchester 300 Sav will hold more powder than a military 308, but a winchester 308 will hold more than a win 300 sav, go figure.

Best wishes from the Boer Ranch,
