Vintage day at the range.

The rifle is a Remington 550-1 I bought from My Uncle Nolan when I was 8 years old. That was 55 years ago. It has not been to the range in some time due to the fact it had open sights and my eyes suck now. Thanks to TNSailorman it is now wearing a new vintage, period correct Weaver 4x 22 scope. Taregets are only 25 yards and I am not the greatest shot, but a good time was had and some fond memories returned.

Try some different ammo, these like this and those like that. That's how mine are, it amazes me still how an ammo change can change the world in the 22 LR.

Looks good! I remain very nostalgic about shooting my old rifles, from early antique Winchesters to eary 22 Lr and everything in-between. Very theraputic for me and yes, my eyes suck as well!

Very nice lookin Remington. Looks to have been taken care of. I'm with Gtek about different ammo. There's some ammunition out there that the rifle will really cotton to. About your shootin, that's not bad at all. Looks to be minute-of-wabbit.

That one group is really good! I've heard nothing but good things about the Norma TAC-.22 ammo. I'm going to get some myself to try in my Remington 581's once I get the right scopes on them.

Very nice rifle-- I also have a 550-1 and am very impressed with how well they shoot! Also nice to see how the scope is set up. I have a scope set aside for mine, as I still shoot iron sights-- but someday.....

I also have a 550-1 that I picked up this past winter. After weeks of cleaning and decruding, I ended up with a real shooter. It will shoot .22 shorts or long rifle in the same tube without a hitch. That strange breach thing really works when clean. Mine likes Aquila .22 super extra hollow points 38 grain. Great accuracy and lethal on tree rats.

My Dad was a fan of the 550, he had four. He said and I tend to agree that it was as good a .22 semi-auto as you could find. Not only did his shoot well but an old WW2 DI could shoot.

I have a 550-1 that according to the date code stamped on the barrel, was made in March 1948. It's a tackdriver.

I've found that as long as it's well lubricated and the Williams floating chamber is moving freely, it will function as a semiauto with CCI .22 CP Shorts or Longs. It sounds like a nail gun with them and no hearing protection is needed.

I agree that the old 550-1 is a great shooter and enjoy mine when I take it out for some 22 fun. I'm a sucker for old Remington 22's and if I run across one that needs a home I try to bring them home. I have a few of the 510 thru 513 models plus a 33 and 34 and enjoy shooting them.
