I opened a safe in my workshop for the first time in years and found five unopened cans of black powder.

Now you need to check the rest of the safes to find the guns it goes to. LOL

Unless you have an explosion venting storage safe storing BP in a safe is not a good idea. If you are storing guns any material that burns other than stocks is not a good idea but you can get by with it in a fire. Any type of gunpowder generates oxygen so even if it doesn't blow the safe it ensures the burn damage will be much greater.

Worst case is the house on fire and a safe with blackpowder kills a fireman jail time become a very real possibility.

Still it's a nice find.

I can relate! I got one of my "empty" pistol cases the other day and found a 45 LC Blackhawk I forgot I owned.

Black powder in a safe???? sounds like a bomb to me!
