I have bunch of lead scraps, odd chunks and stuff that is not easy to ship i am going to make into ingots when the weather is better. I measured the inside of the small flat rate box to be about 5 x 1 1/2 x 8 1/4. What would that ingot weigh?? Anyone know the formula?? Thanks

I believe that lead weights .41lbs per cubic inch. that being said multiple length(5) times width(8.25) time height(1.5) then multiply by .41 = 25.3#. If I am wrong please let me know.

If you're going to smelt the lead into an ingot that fits the box, I wouldn't worry about the weight.
You can ship up to 70 lbs in a flat rate box.

The small flat rate box is 500 cubic inches.

500 x .41 =205 lbs.

A little over the 70 lb limit for the FR boxes.

Figure out what would fit in a flat rate envelope :D (postage would be a couple of dollars cheaper) I'll bet you could get a 40# ingot in one of those things... 8 1/2 x 11 x 3/4"

There's a new flat rate box 5-3/8” x 8-5/8” x 1-5/8” that ships for $4.95, much smaller than the old small box and much sturdier than the envelopes (a couple of cubic inches bigger too).

I still think you could get 40# in the envelope, and only 30# in the new little box -- and the 40# envelope would be funnier. In either case, you'd have to cast a single ingot that just fit in the box/envelope. (If you use gold, platinum, tungsten, or osmium instead of lead you won't have to pack it so tight :))

Thanks to everyone for their help. Most people said that a 5 x 8.25 x 1.5 wont fit into their pots. I will have to make them smaller I guess but 25 # is pretty good for the new small flat rate box.

2.6 x 8.5 x 1.6" ought to fit tho... (Ship two of them per box. They'll fit tight enough to not shift around and tear the box)

Edit: I got it! 5.25 x 1.6 x 2.1", and stack four in a little flat-rate box.
