Yep, a hen, right there in the yard when I went out late morning. I don't know if she just happened to be passing through, or is planning on nesting... I hope the latter. We used to have one that nested in the yard for several years, and really enjoyed seeing her. If I get lucky I'll get a pic, but sorry, none today.

town of 126,000 residents 15 miles from NYC + we are over run with them - known to attack kids on walking to school - we had none here till some were imported from Virginia - no hunting allowed at all -

I remember a huge flock of them always in the same yards when we would walk around our community finger lake in South Jersey. Out here the dogs are constantly barking at them. They know they are safe from the dogs and hunters on my property. They did get decimated a few years back by the coyotes but have made a decent comeback.

Don't make the mistake of feeding them. They get too pushy if you do!

I see a lot of turkeys daily. Mostly driving Volvo's or Subarus! :D

Seriously,, good to hear you've got a hen in your yard again. We have our share of turkey's around us. The season opened this past Saturday,, and I've seen some nice Tom's as I travel around. Too bad they weren't in places I can hunt.

Two turkeys used to fly into the chicken yard. You could walk in to the enclosure and you could get pretty close to them. I had a picture of me holding the female after pinning her against the fence. They got some free food, but nothing eats for free. The other one got that message and decided to leave.

A good year for Turkey here! Even the youngsters are big.
I got this one on April 1st.
My wife and I drove by two gobblers on the driveway on our way to Church last Sunday.
I rolled down the window and said”What’s up?”
Both of them spun around and gobbled loud!
“OK” I said as we drove off….https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240416/80a455c3f243fab311a174718e9701e1.jpg

It did cross my mind to set out next to that down tree... and see if a tom came to visit too, come season. I'll have to find my book, I'm thinking maybe spring turkey is either in or very close.

I thought this would be a thread about my Son in Law.
My 6 year old inner brain has a question; why do we hunt turkey in the Spring and eat them in the Fall?

In Kentucky, there is both a spring and fall season.

My family often had a thanksgiving style dinner in late spring as well as the traditional thanksgiving dinner in november.

many states have a spring + fall season + you are allowed to eat them at any time -

We have a small flock that's been residing on our club range for the past few years. Great habitat for them...no hunting allowed, creek running down east property line, corn/soybean fields on both sides, and a couple acres of scrub timber and brush behind the safety berm. They're obviously accustomed to the noise; the other day, I spooked out a half-dozen or so as I passed the 100-yard berm on my way to change targets on the 200. I'd been shooting over their heads for a good half-hour.

Over in Midland my daughters mother in law needed some work done, so I got volunteered. Her condo was by a wetland and there were resident turkeys that would challenge you if you tried to go through the area where the residents fed them. That place got flooded twice when the Sanford dam failed and she ended up selling out to a developer. I thought those birds would be good freezer filler but she thought of them as pets.
