My Marlin 338MX has been at my dealers for a couple weeks now and I was waiting to do the paperwork when the 338MXLR was there . Well it arrived yesterday , so I went in today and did the paperwork and call in . While I was waiting I mounted a Leupold Vari XIII 6.5-20 on the 338MX and a Leupold Vari XIII 4.5-14 on the 338MXLR .

I plan to use the 338MXLR with the scope on it for hunting season next year . But the 338MX will need a different scope for hunting season for sure !

Oh sweet! I've got one on order at my local shop and can't wait for it. I wanted the MX. I just like blue and walnut, call me a traditionalist. I'm figuring it'll look good next to my 1895CB.

Provided these two shoot as well as the 308MX and 308MXLR I got two years ago , my plan is to kill a whitetail with each of them during the 2009 season with factory ammo . Thenn leave the 338MXLR for factory ammo and jacketed handloads . Then make the 338MX into a cast bullet only rifle provided I am able to get some decent molds and gaschecks !

 You are a lucky mon, to have 2 fine new marlins, I was hoping for one myself, I just bought a Freecheck II to make .338 GC's for a couple of my bolt guns, so one of those might help you when you get ready to cast some boolits. Good Luck with your new hardware. S.L.:cbpour:

Thanks for the info , I'd never heard of this item !

I already have had a 33 WCF for a couple years now and had laid in about 3500 of the Hornady gas checks that were manufactured a few years ago ! Also supposedly Hornady is manufacturing the 338 checks again as they have them listed in there 2009 catalog .

I had purchased the 2 Leupold bases two weeks ago when I paid for both the rifles . That was an additional $40 . and yesterday when I went to the gunshop to do the paperwork I purchased 2 sets of medium rings , that was another $50 .

Now all I have left to pay for are 4 boxes of ammo I ordered the other day and a set of dies if they should hit the market anytime soon .
The ammo should be at my dealers next week sometime .

But I'm going to Fredricksburg tonight for dinner . Just might slide by the Gander Mountain and see if they have a couple boxes of ammo for the 338 , I just happen to have a $40 gift certificate and this would be a perfect thing to use it for !

I have an MX waiting at my local dealer to be picked up.I took a look and it is a beautiful rifle.I can hardly wait to shoot it.I will need to come up with a mold or two for cast shooting.

Hullo Fellas, Lee has a mould that throws a+-220 gr Boolit , for cheap and Hoch had a nice nose pour 250 gr for $145-$205 single/double cavity, both are GC, I am still ...I have to have one of these levers to go with my other marlins.
I have been addicted to the .338 for a long time, I use a Winnie 71 in 348 for now, but soon....enjoy.

Slow Elk , I got a mold for my Marlin 1895 in 33 WCF about 3 years ago . Got a really nice two cavity Lyman 338320 . I am thinking this one should work pretty well in the 338 Marlin Express .

Also Ranch Dog has made mention of coming out possibly with a .338" diameter 180-220 grain gas check bullet specifically for use in the 338 Marlin Express .

I'm gonna get a chamber cast made from my 338MX for Ranch Dog and send it to his engineering department !

Should be a couple weeks before I get it to them . But after that I am sure they will come up with something shortly !

And then we'll have a year wait for Lee to get the test molds out !

Took my 338's to the range today !

Shot one 3 shot group at 100 yards with the 338MX . It was 2.25" , not so great ! But I'm hoping it will come in a bit later !

Shot two 3 shot groups at 100 yards with the 338MXLR . The first was 2.165" and the second was 1.95" . Again not great by any means , but hopefully they both will shoot in some !

Might just have to go back to the range tuesday or wednesday and give it another try !

6PT, I'm glad to see you got to the range to shoot those new marlins, I'm sure they will slick up a bit with some more rounds down range. Are you going to do chamber cast on both?
Maybe send to Ranch Dog and whine a little, act pitiful, tell him if only you had a mold for them...I have already put my 2CT worth in to him...Keep shootin...
