I have some older drillings that are chambered for 9.3x72R. I have dies for 9.3x74R. I am aware that the 9.3x74R is substantially more powerful than the 9.3x72R and not to mix these as it would be extremely dangerous to try to put a 9.3x74R in a gun chambered for a 9.3x72R.

But, would my dies for a 9.3x74R work for a 9.3x72R?

I may be shooting 9.3x72R with black powder.

The cartridges look similar.

First, do you have the appropriate shell holder? Run the 72mm case into your die - if it puts a neck on your case I would doubt it will work. Or rather, it may work to size a case but it will overwork the neck each time.

I was thinking the opposite.......At a glance, It looks to me like the 74 dies may not contact and size the 72 cases all the way. Possibly, if all you need is neck sizing and bullet seating it may work... You will not know until you try it. Make a dummy round and see if it will chamber. With a drilling at least you will have no feeding issues. This is my $.02 worth of opinion.

Not absolutely sure, but I think that the 9.3x72R is smaller in all dimensions than the 9.3x74R. I'm
thinking the 9.3x72R case won't even touch the 9.3x74R die anywhere except the neck, it might work for neck sizing only?
