I've been in email contact with Hornaday, they say their 45 cal. gas check is NOT for handgun cartridges of .452" diameter but for rifles at .458". The diameter is the issue, not what it's used in. I have also contacted Lyman but after three days have not heard back. Who makes a gas check for the .452" diameter bullets?

Blammer has them in stock through the group buy system....look them up in the Group Buy section or the Classifieds

I have used Hornady 45 caliber checks both ways, on .452 and .458. No problem that I can see.8-)

I didnt know there was a difference in the 45's until about a month ago.

If they are loose like the Hornady GC's on my 500S&W bullets I just put a small dot of super glue in them before I size and lube.

Don't believe everything you hear.

The Hornady 45 check is sized correctly for 0.452" handgun bullets, NOT for 0.458" rifle bullets.

The check O.D. is about 0.460", just right for crimping on in a typical 0.452" - 0.454" handgun sized die, but too small to crimp reliably in the typical 0.459" - 0.461" rifle die.

Last I heard, Lyman checks were being outsourced from Hornady, so Lyman 45 caliber checks should be the same.

Gator makes a check especially for 0.458" rifles, identified as the "Gator 458." Unlike the standard 45 check, the 458 check OD is big enough to crimp on when a rifle bullet is sized.

The Gator 45 is more or less the same as the Hornady 45.

In general, a gas check OD should be 0.005" - 0.010" larger than the sizing die, so that the sizing die will squeeze it tightly, helping to crimp the check to the shank. The sizing die must have a gently tapered entrance to swallow the oversize gas check. Not all sizing dies have a satisfactory tapered entrance.

What problem are you trying to solve ?

There are a lot of misconceptions about cast bullets. This thread is just one of them.

Good info to have....was getting a bit worried about the new box I have sitting here.

Just FYI, I measured about 10 of 'em at random with the caliper. Every one measured .460"

Me too! :bigsmyl2: They work just fine. I would only worry about them being too small for my rifle loads.
