Bought a used Honda 21" mower recently. Pull start works fine but it has an electric starter which is worn out. Amazon often has good prices on parts like this but not this time. Every where else I look the starter is about $100 shipped.

Just curious if anyone knows about a discount supplier?

Thanks for looking.

If a mower has a starter it has a flywheel. I have replaced several nylon starter gears but never a starter. Youtube shows short cuts on replacing them. The last push mower I had quit running in 100 degree weather and I poured gas over it and set on fire and bought a new one.

I've ordered from stens and Jacks small engine parts. There's a good chance your starter just needs cleaned/lubed and perhaps a new bendix.

A bushing has spun in the nose housing so it's pretty much toast.

When I need parts, I use the online parts companies and/or manufacturer websites to get the part number(s) and then search ebay and amazon for the best deals. I figure all the replacement parts are made in China. The cheapest is probably made on the same assembly line as the most expensive, so why pay any more than I have to.

I've bought some stuff from Jack's a few times.
They did me right.

You might dig around and find something a couple bucks cheaper,
but their prices have always be quite competitive, and they send it right out.

None of the listing on EBAY are compatible with this application.

No matches on Jack's Small Engines using the OEM part number.

I agree. In this case, everything I can find is going to be $100 shipped, many cite wait times in excess of 6 months and this starter is roughly the size of a 4oz juice bottle like toddlers are given. Absurd.

well, that's a bummer.
Looks like you'll be pull starting this unit.

PS, some of the shade tree small engine repair shops have lots of dead mowers for parts, maybe see if you can find any of those guys in your area. FB marketplace seems to have a bunch...many times they advertise some reconditioned units, contact them and ask for parts...that's how I located a shifter for a snapper rider.

After disassembling and inspecting this starter and searching on line for parts it appears Honda screwed the pooch with this particular item.
That surprises me but it happens occasionally no matter what manufacturer is discussed.

Is it possible that a starter from a Predator engine from Harbor Freight would fit? They are supposed to be clones of Hondas. Don't even know if they sell parts, but it won't hurt to ask.

The starters for the walk behind mowers are unique for whatever reason. I am considering ordering an electric starter conversion kit for a 6.5hp motor just to see if it'll mount up the same. The whole kit is cheaper than I can find a replacement starter for and they're readily available.
Might simply be because the walk behind mower battery is very small and installs in a small box on the mower handle.

Sell it as a pull start mower. Buy another model or brand.
