Would the bottom half of a 20lb propane tank make a good smelting pot?

For a little while, I think they are kind if thin.

I'll have to check out the flea market. Might get lucky and find a pot.

I guess I'm odd... I really don't like to do huge smelts. I recently found a nice, cheap, chinkenese cast iron pot that is essentially just like my 6# RCBS lead Pot but will hold about 60#. I can load it up with WW, smelt, flux skim AND POUR from the same potsimply by picking up the handle & using a pair of channel-locks on the tab opposite the pour spout.

WAAY easier than dipping... especially since I pour 5, 2# ingots at a time.

Maybe use the top 3/4 of the tank, flip it upside down and somehow use the valve hole to make a bottom put smelting pot???

Revolver Junkie,
Thank You!! I have been reading many threads about the impressive setups that some have. You reminded me that it doesn't take a huge setup with jet burners or electrically controlled thermostats to melt lead. A pot and a fire is all it takes. Did you have to increase air flow for the fire to make it hotter? like a blacksmith using a bellows?
