I worked at the South Texas nuclear plant for a while in the 80's.
Would leave out from work and head to Matagorda for surf fishing.
It was hit or miss but I loved it. You never knew what you'd hook into.

I went down there for a few days not too many years ago. It was great.
The state has a few fishing piers with lights a little ways back from the beach & surf where the river comes into it
and the shrimp boats go back & forth.

There's East and West Matty bays, West is the largest you were in.
Fished east since I was young, its closest to me. Good fishing in both, most fish the back shorelines marshes except in fall when fish are schooling.

I love fishing Matagorda island. Beach combing also. I have seen wild hogs on the beach, I can only imagine what they would taste like. I have been warned to watch out for rattlers on the island but have never seen one. I have caught a bunch of trout and reds over the years going back to the sixties. First trip was as a boy scout camping trip. The Navy used to drop flash bombs on the island so it always looked like a storm was coming. I remember A4s flying so low you could almost read the pilots name tag. I kick myself for not buying a couple of beach lots in Port O'Conner before the developers discovered the town.

Lots of trout and reds in the bay. Generally great fishing but depends on the seasons and whether the red tide is around.
