Any bathroom fan experts here????
It just stopped working.
I checked, and there is power at the plug.
No continuity through the two wires.
It's original to the house, from 1963.
Nutone Mod 8830
Motor is Nutone mod 118-001C.
Both not made anymore.
Anyone know of an alternate motor?????

Pull it out and look at the specs. decal. It'll show amp, rpm, motor frame size, stuff like that
You should be able to find a replacement from there.
I've gotten a few HVAC motors on Amazon just from the specs. on the old one.

Google says Fasco D121, AO Smith Ja2C607r, Dayton 38N561, Century Model 24, are all the same as Nutone.

Buy a new one LED and just replace it they do not last forever and it happens

I'd replace the whole fan. Considering it is sixty years old, it might save you a 25% on your electric bill.

I woul also replace the whole fan. In my experience they are much quieter.

Being in a bathroom, Is there a ground fault switch somewhere along the line. Once in a while mine stops working and the ground fault has been tripped

This. Don't even bother trying to clean it, fix it, etc at this point.

Might check to see if the motor bearings need some lube first, they usually are just low power shaded pole motors. Yup, replace if needed.

I installed one a few years ago with the fan motor in the attic above the bathroom, then exiting outside. Almost can’t hear it running. Much better/quieter than the ones with the motor just above the ceiling, in my opinion.

I did the same thing. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005XNNYMU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1

It's been up there for 8 years.

As others have already said, replace it. A new one will probably be quieter and may or may not be more effective (move more air) and efficient (cost less to run).

I would not expect a modern one to last sixty years though.

Motor spins fine, no burnt smell.
Outlet has power, but no continuity between the two wires on the motor.
I like repairing stuff, so just wanted to see if it was worth fixing.
Seems this this is obsolete and nutone no longer has parts for it.
According to nutone, this fan spins CCW.
All I've found are CW motors.
It's had a good life and it would probably be a good idea to just replace it.
Now to find something that would fit into the same hole.
First time I've had to do anything with it.
It was not as dirty/dusty as I thought it would be.
Kind of quiet now without the fan.
All kinds of strange noises coming from something when going to the bathroom.
Wonder if it's me or the weather.
Maybe my cat.

I take it you are hand spinning the motor. Have you tried running a jumper wire to power the fan? Something may have gotten to the wiring and chewed though it. This may be good to know for safety reasons.

If the motor continuity is showing open the internal thermal fuse let go or a winding burned off internally. Motor is toast.

Agree with above. It will cost more $$ and time to try to fix rather than replace. A new one will be more energy efficient, but never last as long as that one did. Like they say……they don’t make em like they used to.

I was just about to go looking for a replacement fan, but I found a motor.
Wasn't all that excited about crawling up in the attic, so I'm happy, happy, happy.
Should be here in a week or so.

You might want to save the old one.

A life long friend and I used to save odds and ends like that to shoot for 'ballistics research' with various calibers.

...it could be recycled to extract casting fumes, if indoors.
I use an air hand-dryer, heating resistance deactivated, permanently borrowed from somewhere

I got mine on amazon. The house was built around 1975 and I got a perfect replacement.

I'm guessing that is the same model fan that was in the house I grew up in. If it is, the motor is about $80 on amazon. Likely more from other dealers. If it is the same fan, it's round and I don't know of another fan that will fit in the same hole as the old one, meaning you will have to cut a new hole and repair/paint drywall to replace the whole fan.

If you enjoy fixing things pull the motor apart and see if you can find the problem. I doubt that small of a motor has a thermal fuse, might be a loose/broken wire. I think you would have smelled a burned motor, unless the noises (and other related things) you mentioned in another post were masking the smell.

Nutone motors are famous for weak magnets. When i built the house in 1980 Nutone was top of the line around here.

I would buy a new one that is noisy—that way my noises are covered up, and it is not left on.

I had to replace a round bathroom exhaust vent for a friend’s mom.
All I could find was square replacements.
I got a piece of 1/4” aluminum plate big enough to cover the hole and cut a square hole to fit the new vent and it looked good and worked well!

For those of you using the in-attic inline fans do you feel safe with a Chinese motor attached to your roof frame up where you cannot see it? If those motors short internally are they protected with a thermal breaker? Not likely. They will just go up in flames.
The Chinese are quite capable of building very high quality equipment but be assured it is not coming here since we want the cheapest stuff available.

So it got here, but is not the same.
No mounting studs on the correct side.
Should never believe "granger".
Not the first time they have got it wrong.
I'll have to make somekind of bracket to mount it to the housing.
Kind of getting use to the quiet.

Wish it were that easy.
Can't do it on this one.
No holes for the screws to go through.

Got it done today.
Working just like the old one.
These fans are kind of expensive.
Saved on just changing the motor.
