Does anyone have a source for 1/2-27 hex nuts to fit the star sizer punches? Preferably a little thicker than the star originals so I could add a set screw. At this point I have a dozen punches and only one nut. I'd like to put a nut on each of them, so I don't have to fiddle around with adjusting them every time.

I was intrigued. never heard of 1/2-27, 1/2-28 is hard enough to find
but here is one

I may give scag a try. I was put off by the name, and the description, (one nut and the package weighs 5 lbs?) and because despite owning and using a large variety of power equipment over the years, I have never heard of them.

I got 10 nuts from eBay along with a 1/2 28 tap to clean up the set screw threads after I drilled and tapped for the 8-32 set screws. Some are thicker than others so you don't know until you get them.

Scag is high end zero turn lawnmowers,

In my digging, it looks like the nut to mount stem mounted PTO switches. You may be able to find some at a lawnmower repair shop. They probably get tossed in a box ( or the trash) when ever a new switch is installed.

Unfortunately it is probably very thin.

Might also try stuff like replacement choke cables, they may very well use the same thread.

Greetings,

I have machined many 1/2-27 nuts for the Star machines.

You buy a length of 11/16" hex bar, 12L14 alloy.

Either chuck in a three jaw or use a 11/16" hex collet.

1/2-27 taps are available from McMaster Carr.

On occasion, you can source the taps via eBay. Just be sure they are not marked "Made in China"

Cheers,

Dave

scag has been around a while and makes some of the best mowers money can buy right here in USA since the 80's.
for $2 and change its worth a try.
but I'm the kind of mechanical fool that would source some oversize extra heavy duty 7/16 nuts. drill them out and retap with the no so common thread

Axle nuts if I remember correctly, forgot all about them, steal'em from the kid's bikes, they'll never notice.
