View Full Version : Loose Screws

Before the boating accident, where I lost this rifle, the screws on this chassis would never stay tight. There are enough adjustments, in the stock, to allow it to fit anyone but the screws keep loosening. I can shoot 3 shots and the screws will be loose. MDT’s response was to apply purple loctite but the screws on the comb must be loosened to remove the bolt for cleaning.

Any idea on what I can do to keep the screws tight?

I don't understand; don't you have to find the rifle first?

I've always had good results with non-permanent thread sealer. There's lots of good ones on the market, including Loctite.

There is a product called vibra tight its a polymer type thread locker that will lock threads from vibration and allow them to be released with out heat.

What country gent posted. The stuff works as it is a plastic like substance that allows the screw/nut to be turned. But won't turn on its own. It is like sticking a gummy bear into the threads....

Comes in a small tube and is easy to apply. Even for stuff such as trigger stop screws it beats loctite.

Sorta' along the lines of a nyloc nut, that has the nylon insert that does the same.

Perfect application for vibratite323452

Since you are going to be periodically removing these adjustment knobs, I think the vibr-tite would far outlast blue loctute for this job. Once blue locktite has dried and broken loose, it doesn't maintain a firm hold, at least for me. The vibra-tite is like a plastic filler and remains for repeated loosening and fastening of the bolt or nut.

Exactly what I was going to recommend. I have used it for decades and if you follow the directions it works as advertised

I'm a big Locktite blue fan.

Beware the red one.
Put something together with it, and like herpes---- its on there for life.

I would try lock washers. The "star" type. Dan

Nail Polish my wife decided she no longer liked.
So, free (for me)

That, or a small O-ring on the screws in your pic as they seem to be a course thread and hand/finger tightened.

I use the brightest red or orange nail polish on front sights too, with an undercoat of white.
jmo,
.
Edit: Touch a soldering gun to the head of a screw for 10 seconds will soften any Loctite for screw removal, even RED... but not the heat proof variety. :coffeecom

A neoprene o-ring or a couple nylon washers should work. Drill a hole, small hole, through threads, use piece of heavy mono filament like a nyloc screw.

I use Loc-tite blue.

YES! Blue Loc-Tite. That is what I use to keep ALL of the screws tight on my single action army revolvers. Keeps them tight but the screws are easily removed anytime necessary.

Thanks for the many responses. I’m going to give Vibra Tite a shot. It seems the screws can be loosened and retightened without having to reapply the thread locker.

What will they come up with next?

How about a wrap of plumbers' tape. Might work?
Good Luck,

Just be aware that blue Loctite comes in a red bottle.........

Fit up an "O" ring to the thumb screw. That helps dampen the vibration and keep the screw snug.

I have a bottle of Vibra Tite VC3 like this one. I’ve had it for 30 plus years. I use it all the time. I’m careful to not glue the cap on. I did that with my previous bottle and the plastic cap broke getting it off. Good stuff.
