Is there a list of good powders? Or wondering if there is a way to put together a reference page or thread that would show all the good or bad powders for shake-n-bake. Even a spread sheet so you don't have to read 20 threads to get an answer. I am tired of ford blue but don't want to take 20 dollar gambles on each different color. Everything is way to expensive today and grocery's are cutting into my boolit fund. I would like a good black and red for now.
Thanks for the help

Smoke's

No need to go anywhere else. And his 3 pack is a nice way to test colors. If you have questions about coverage, ease of use, etc, ask him.

I have not had any luck with Eastwood powders unless I spray it on. Kinda sucks too I have quite a few pounds.

If you don't want to go with Smoke's offerings then Eastwood Ford Light Blue is the most foolproof I have used.

+1 on Smoke's powders. His Clear is my 'go-to' for about everything.

This powder is very good for shake and bake. Full coverage, no boogers or bare spots. They only bind if they go butt to butt but that's rare and easy to deal with. Otherwise I go right from the oven and dump into a water bath. Shot many thousands of these.

I've always used Eastwoods powders, hotcoat . Lime green and light blue. I bought a pound of Translucent Grape and it will not stick. I only dry shake and bake when humidity is under 40% and it was 35% in the house and it would not stick but lime green did.

The question is, I wonder if they get humidity in the powder manufacturing it? Most powder coating companies do spray and its is not a critical as shake and bake for static. Can adding a desiccant pack help, or maybe putting the powder on a tray in the over at 140 to dehydrate? Or maybe this powder just won;t work? I have never had a pack of hotcoat not stick before.

Sometimes warming the boolits a little helps. I've even got Harbor Freight red to coat pretty well if I warm the boolits up a little with a light bulb

I have used Eastwood powder for auto chrome since day one, now nearing 20 years. I only do the shake and bake method and do not own a powder coating gun at all. At first I had problems here in FL, then realized it was humidity, not the powder, so went to a kitchen supply outlet and got a big mouth air tight sealing jug with a rubber seal, problems with consistent covering went right away. The powder comes in sealed containers because it is dried and if the container is opened and not sealed back up, the powder absorbs moisture from the air.

I use the black auto chrome coating and only add small amounts to the air soft pellets at a time and start fresh, per batch. For the ARs I use plain base bullets and do a double coat, baking each coat, size with a lube pad & a RCBS sizer-luber after baking. I use bent long nose needle nose pliers and an upside-down hardware cloth box, 1" deep with bullet baked base up.

The powder and the process works well enough to shoot sub 1/2" groups at 100 meters at 2,700 fps measured over a chronograph with the RCBS 200 flat nose plain base bullet (mould discontinued). However a copy of that plain base iron mould is now sold by Saeco..
I shoot this PCed bullet in a 35 Whelen, 350 RM, 358 MGP and a 357 Super Mag Rifle. These are Martini, Mausers, Rem 700 and ARs, so not a rifle, but several rifles.

I tried the Eastwood Hotcoat Translucent Grape and it did not work right out of the bag. I did not open it until I was using it and it was 35% humidity when I opened it. It stuck spotty and the bullets were clean. Lime green stuck to the others and the same ones I tried in the grape after wiping them off.

The question, can the brand new powder be saved, or is it just trash unless I put it on fishing jigs? I have not tried warming the bullets yet.

If it won't shake and bake then it's still good for electrostatic spraying. Maybe it's not something you're into yet but some day you might be. Perfectly sprayed boolits are a beautiful thing and not much more work once you get the process down.

I use the [Eastwood?] black auto chrome coating...
- Is that in fact Eastwood black chrome (https://www.eastwood.com/hotcoat-powder-black-chrome.html)?
- Could you (please) post a pic of the result ?
