Chewed up brass from Rossi 92 44/40

I traded into another ‘92 Rossi in 44/40. It’s a beautiful, almost mint, case colored saddle ring carbine. Fairly smooth action, accurate and fun!

But, Im getting chewed up/dinged up case mouths. I’m guessing it’s hooking in something during ejection? It’s not a huge deal, but fixing/smoothing out the dents/nicks in the mouths on a 2-300 cases is getting old.

Anyone else have this issue? Is it fixable?

I replaced the ejector spring with a lighter spring and it fixed mine. It also drops brass at my feet instead of 30 feet away.

I have an old 44-40 El Tigre carbine made in the 1920's and it dents case mouths with some regularity - not every case but maybe 30%-40%. The 44-40 case is quite thin and easily damaged when empty (loaded rounds are obviously more robust).

Not in a Rossi, but others I've seen do that is from the ejection/ejector being so strong the case mouth
hits & dents on the edge of the chamber as it is extracted and kicked out.
A buddy's HK would do that with GI 7.62 NATO brass, and it's plenty thick too.

The ejector spring should be trimmed as noted above. It’s pushing hard until the case gets flipped out of the chamber.
I’ve owned two Rossis(.357&44-40) and I trimmed that spring on both.

When loading for lever actions in particular, having brass eject at ones feet is quite convenient for policing brass.

pretty much what does it ! slower you work the lever the worse too I think

Ok thanks everyone.
Hopefully this weekend I’ll get a chance to work on it. I’m going to trim the ejector spring and see how it goes.
I’ve got a stock replacement and a reduced power spring coming, just in case.

Mine does the same. Cases have been salvageable so far. It is fairly old #N017xxx, 25 years or so??

I would appreciate details on replacement spring and/or how much you trimmed off the spring. My 92 is driving me nuts with the high altitude ejection.

Go to the Steve'sGunz website and he will sell you a video and the parts you need to make that Rossi run much better and fix that brass mangling problem.

Go to the hardware store and pick up a Century C-530 spring. Only a couple of bucks. Work great it mine. They may be a bit different length, but they are lighter wire and work great.

I ordered the Steve’s Gunz spring, but they arnt here yet.
I wish I’d known about the hardware store spring, never even thought of looking there lol.

I clipped 2 coils off my factory spring, it now drops the cases at my feet, and has eliminated almost all of the dings & nicks in the mouth. Out of 20rds I had 2 with small/slight dings in the mouth.
