My brother left me a model 1895 saddle ring carbine in .40-82. I have some questions:

Can .40-82 brass be made from .40-90 straight cases?

Can anyone suggest a good smokeless load for 260 - 280 grain bullets?

I've never seen an 1895 in 40-72! Cool!
I believe it is usually formed from 405 WCF brass

Standard Model 1895 Winchester calibers included two 40 Calibers. 40-72 WCF & 405 WCF. In 1908 Winchester dropped 40-72 as a standard caliber offering. A number of barrels remained and were available as a Special Order thereafter. In 1932 Winchester assembled 600 plus, cleanup rifles.

40-82 WCF was a earlier bottlenecked cartridge chambered in the 1885 Highwall & 1886 Lever Action.

40-72 dies are available from C&H. Bertram brass is available from Graf's. It can also be made from 405 WCF. Rim diameter needs to be reduced in diameter and thickness. Given the scarcity of Hornady 405 and the cost! I would not entertain that route. This was originally a black powder cartridge. Smokeless loads with 4759,4198 and 3031 are viable.

40-82 WCF dies were produced by RCBS and Redding. Used sets are often found on EBay. Brass can be made from 45-90 WCF. Most 40-82's were chambered for a .406 bullet. Many barrels require a .408 diameter bullet. When necking down 45-90, the neck tends to become thicker. Which in turn creates a loaded round, that will not enter the chamber. Inside neck reaming or outside neck turning allows one to than load a .408 bullet.

40-90 Straight brass is .025 small in diameter at the base to form 40-82 WCF.
