Bonjour,
I'll get straight to the point.......
The only powder readily available here in France is Vectan. I'm searching for data for cast boolits. I'm going to start casting 140gr SWC & 125gr RF for my 38's.
I only want to shoot light loads and can't find any in the data manuals.:(

How do you safely work up/work down a load?
Merci,
fusil

Vectan is in the burinng rate area of 231, HP38, 452. Assuming 38 Special, I have found 231 works great for me and you don't need much. I load between 3 and 3.5 gr for general use. To work up, I would start at 3.0 gr and see how it goes for you. Hopefully your data manual will have data for 231 Winchester powder.

Check the Hodgdon web site they should have loads for 231 and HP38.

.............Vectan is the name of a powder company (like IMR) and not the name of an individual type of powder (like 4198).

Hopefully you have a chronograph?

BA10 is very similar to Bullseye. A normal target load in the 38 Special with a 148gr slug is 2.5 / 2.7grs. Since it is a very energetic powder, let's assume BA10 (or this lot of it) may be a bit faster so start with 1.8 grs and work up at 0.1gr at a time.

BA9 is similar to Unique. Assume faster.

A1 is a bit slower then Unique.

A0 is a bit faster then Herco

Those should be good for your 38's

I'd also think that a phone call to the Vectan distributer or Corp Offices should get you SOME kind of load data, with actual lab data?
