Eyeglasses

Like many others my income has been compromised by rising medical insurance costs.
I find that I now need to buy new glasses and the costs (like our shooting optics) are escalating almost daily.
Do any of you have suggestions as to cost saving options?

Do not buy new frames. Take an old pair of glasses with you and have them cut the new lenses for that set of frames.

Get your prescription at a good optometrist, but get your glasses at Walmart.

My wife and I got our glasses at Costco. For each of us, Costco had to send the glasses back several times before they were correct. They didn’t argue and they worked on the issues until they were resolved.

Zenni Optical on the internet. Last pair of glasses with frames was $12.

Wife and I go to Sam's Club, have to be a member. $50 for standard and $110 for Premium. We save much more than that on eyewear. About half of what the doctors office wants.

Walmart, Sams Club, Costco all have much lower prices than the optometrist's in house optician. Instead of buying at the Dr's shop, ask for a printout of your prescription and go to Walmart/Sam's/Costco.
I have been buying glasses at Walmart for 20 plus years. Prices are half to two thirds of most eyedoctor opticians and I think the quality is better. Due to cataract surgury and Medicare, I got a pair of glasses from my optometrist. The lenses are not as tough as the Nikon lenses used by Walmart.

Another vote for Zenni. I've had nothing but good luck from them for around 10 years now. They're cheap enough you can have several pairs for backup.

My vision has gradually improved over the past forty years to the point my optometrist said I don’t need glasses for distance. For up close I’m able to see and read fine print with the cheap 1.25 power reading glasses they sell at the dollar store so that’s where I get mine.

I buy wide view bifocals for computer use. I have 3 monitors and prefer to move my eye instead of my neck to see the side monitors. Zenni got them right the first time out, Walmart failed 3 times and I asked for my money back. Walmart tried to claim there were no such lenses ever made until I showed them the last pair they made me... Walmart optical quality has tanked badly! They also screwed up the prescription 3 times in a row.

I've tried Zenni, I have bifocals and the prescription calls for a torx in my lenses. When they didn't get the lenses right they where very willing to help but never could get it right.

Pretty much what I do. I bought a pair of titanium frames about 10 ro 12 years ago, and haven't had any issues out of them. I picked them out in the store, noted the model I wanted, and bought them online, saving about $50. Course, I am careful with my spectacles, but the previous pairs did finally give out. I expect these to last at least another 10 years if not more.

And ... check your Medicare benifits , if you have the stuff like Humana Gold they will pay a little towards new frames , lenses and even the exam .
It doesn't cover it all ... but every little bit helps.
Don't be arfaid to shop around and ask if they take your Medicare Providers insurance ... you never know !

I’ve tried Walmart twice never as good as the ones I get from my eye doctor.Yes the ones from my eye doctor cost more but they weren’t that much more.There’s a Costco coming to the area maybe I’ll try them for a pair of prescription sunglasses

Another vote for Zenni. I got the cheap frames, and also get prescription shades. My last order for 3 pair was $60 including shipping.

I've been using Walmart for about 10 years, but I'm scheduled for an appointment at the VA in March for the first time in a dozen years, also for hearing aids. I hope it goes well. The main Atlanta VA hospital has a less-than-stellar reputation for many types of care. GF

I get better glasses for far less at my eye Dr. than I ever got from Wal-Mart, they also never bothered to tell me that they didn't take my insurance and billed me full price, not knowing the difference I paid it. When I retired I was able to maintain my company vision and dental plan at the regular employee cost, might be worth looking into. If I ever lose that plan I'll look into VA but I haven't had the most positive experience with them to date.

Costco beat everyone else after I retired. If you pay off your credit card monthly there are huge savings to be had. We average a $250 rebate in September and a $900 one in February.
