Ruger #1's

I already have a few Ruger #1's and am thinking of another or two .

Anyway what kind of results can I expect with cast bullets in a #1S in 45-70 ?

Also does anyone know if Ruger ever made a #1 in 444 Marlin ?

I have had excellent results with cast bullets in my #3 Ruger. I do no recall ever seeing the Ruger SS in 444 marlin.

Ruger has a caliber history on their website. For their single shot rifles (no breakdown between the No. 1 and No. 3) they list the following:

There may be calibers that have been left out of your list.

2 weeks ago, I came close to buying a Ruger # 1 stainless in 6.5 X 55 in a local gun shop in Huntsville.

So I know that Ruger # 1's were made in 6.5 X 55, but I don't see that caliber in your list ?

Just for the record, No, I've never seen a factory Ruger # 1 in 444 Marlin.

I got my .45-70 back in the fall. Haven't had much time to work with it but it will touch holes at 50 yards (iron sights, haven't scoped it yet) with a 350 grain Ranch Dog bullet. Be aware that you'll probably have to seat deep or trim about .050 off cases to get the Ranch Dog bullets to work in a #1 (non-existant throat). I trimmed cases, haven't tried seating deeper yet. I'm loading 55 grn. of 3031 for right on 2000 fps. Yes, it does kick some.

Never have seen a #1 in .444. Though, like with the above mentioned 6.5x55, Ruger builds distributor specials, these may or may not make it on their list as they (my understanding)are not regular production items.

While you're looking at other #1's, look at the 1A 7x57. I feel all warm inside every time I pick mine up.

I recently picked up a new #1 in .45-70. I had the throat reamed so it could take longer bullets (up to the 525gr postel and the Hornady 500gr jacketed), and it wears a 3x9 Bushnell scope.

I have not shot a huge amount of cast through it yet, but I've taken it out to the range with a handfull of different cast loads that I'd worked up for other rifles.

I've noticed a bit of a constriction near the front sight and leading with some loads (mostly with the Postel bullet when pushed @ more than about 1300fps), but the last time I had it out, I shot some 405gr gas checked cast over a reasonably light load of IMR 3031. In a 5 shot group, I got three shots touching @ 100 yards.

I think it has great potential.

If you get a chance try paper patch,shoot all day, a couple dry patches to clean bore (wrapped on bronze brush)leaves a mirror brite bore plus top loads with no leading if needed. #1 405 win is my toy 1.5x5 vx3 leopold

My #1 in 45-70 has gived GREAT service and fine accuracy with castings over the years. It has about a 3500-round history now, and shows no hint of accuracy falling off. Heavy boolits at flank speed will make yer eyes water and sinuses run, but it's a nice carrying rifle. I wouldn't part with mine on a bet.

The Ruger #1 is a fine platform for most any cartage you want to shoot a cast boolit through, I have a 45/70 , 40/70, 38/55, . I have a friend with a machine shop that does my bbl's for me, I use Shelin . I think maybe a 405 winnie next

Check the prices and availability of brass and the available mould choices before you leap.

I would go with a 40-65 Win. rather than the .405 Win.

You're getting one rifle I'd like to add to my arsenal! I only own one #1; 454 Casull. I actually want a 38-55 as well. My experience has been, most 45-70s shoot very good with cast bullets. The other #1 I desire is a 405.

In the Ruger #1 in 45-70 you can expect that it has NO throat. They will shoot very well with bullets they like. With bullets with a full diameter portion ahead of the crimp groove, you will probably find they will not chamber without deep seating them. I would advise that you request boolits of others to test chamber fit before you invest in a mold. Especially if contemplating one of the more expensive Victory or Brooks type molds.

I have a Ruger SS in 45-70. The throat is very short. I use Ranch Dog 350g with 4759 23 to 27 grains. I use a wipe on lube (Juniiors) Which works well. You can use up to 405 grainers or so Not good with heavier bullets due to the throatI get 5 shot clover leafs at 50 rd. I was going to get an Encore or H&R but like the Ruger, Had a Pesdersoli RB wghich was fun to shot but needed a scope mount. Trigger pull without work done to me is just right. I did not need to change the bedding at all( Although easy tio modify) Rick :lovebooli

mine shoots the 405 rcbs into around an inch at a 100. It tends to do best at between 1500 and 1700 fps.

W/ an older No.1-S in 45-70, I had pretty good luck using Cast Performance 405's.

Not sure about the short throat / requires short or deep seated bullet thing. This bullet was seated to the crimp groove:

How are the chambers on a number one.Does brass have a slight bulge after firing.Can they be neck sized.

I've got a few different .45-70s (Marlin 1895s, Pedersoli 1874, and Ruger #1). I believe that my new Ruger has the tightest chamber of all of these. Certainly more than the Marlins.
