I'm new to the 410 reloading. Question is about shot height above wad.
Loading 3 in Remington hull with 13 grs of 2400, and a Rem SP410 with 3/4 oz shot.
The shot is way above the wad ,crimps fine.Just wondering if it's right.

Assuming we're talking about a cylinder shaped shot cup type of wad, the purpose of the wad is to keep the shot together until it exits the bore for a better pattern. So if the shot column is higher that the wad I'd not expect great accuracy as it can become deformed as it travels down the bore. I think the solution is a different wad, a fairly inexpensive item.

Got the load data from Lyman manual, going to load up a few 2 1/2 inch hulls with same wad and 1/2 oz shot.

Yes and finding 410 components is a real challenge right now. Since Claybuster is out of business it is more like finding a gold mine to find any shot wads in 410 for sell. If I remember right, the SP410 is intended for 1/2oz to 5/8 oz. loads. You may have to use a over the powder was to adjust the height of your column. I am pretty much a beginner on the 410 also and have been doing a lot of reading. One thing I have found out is the 410 is not as easy a shell to load as the 12 and 20 gauges. james

Wads are made for 1/2 oz skeet loads. Have only loaded skeet loads, using all Winchester components.

The 296 powder i used, took up less room, compared to 2400. Now newer powder are just made for the 410.

Do use hard magnum shot for tighter paterns.

lead shot is fine over the shot cup and most 410 data uses the same wad for 2 1/2 and 3 inch hull . There is not a lot of choices when it comes to 410 wads , but company like Ballistic Products do sell special type wads for the 410 .
Here is another example the waa12r is used now for 1 1/4 -1 3/8 loads wich has 1 1/8 shot cup and the old shotshells had no shot cup at all lead shot loaded on top of fiber wads . This is fine for lead shot only .
there is no news about Claybuster and companys like Graf an Sons are still receiving claybuster wads and claybuster web site has no news of going out of business

I quoted a source that told me that claybuster was no longer shipping and probably not producing wads for some time. Usually, I don't make statements that I haven't checked out or had personal knowledge about. This time I did and I apologize for that . Claybusters site is indeed still up and running. The people who I usually buy my wads told me that it had been quite some time since they received a shipment of wads from them and that they had no word on their back orders. I don't know what is going on with them, but there seems to be a problem somewhere. james

You might check with Precision Reloading. They usually have a fair selection of 410 componets.

I know sooner or later I will have to give in.And buy components from them guys.Just trying to use up what I have. Shipping is not going to get any cheaper this new year coming up.
