Anyone shooting 45-70 cast in an encore? What mold, bullet size, powder, etc.... are you using, any help would be appreciated. I am going black bear hunting in June and need to work up a load for this encore. Thanks to all. I have a ranchdog 425 mold, will this work? I am new to loading the 45-70....

I don't load that bullet in an encore but I do in a contender. If you don't mind using dracon fiber for fill I like using anywhere bewteen 22-26 grains of 2400 with a federal primer. I'm sure any of those loads will kill you a deer at any reasonable range. BTW using 26 grains makes the hardest recoiling handgun I own, unported it comes straight back and up. It really makes my .500 BFR seem comfortable with top end loads.

I'm just beginning to work up my Katadin in 45-70 and the Gould HP boolit. So far I think I've concluded that mine does not like crimped boolits. I've got to shoot what I have loaded with 3031 and my BP lube and then change to a different lube. Then I'll try another powder and I'll go from there. I may get to the range once a month, so it's not a fast project.

I have a katadin also and have been putting off shooting cast. That is what I got it for but the t/c barrels in 45-70 have no throat. When I fix that ?

I have a 40-65 Roller that I load the 400gr. Lyman Snover in. I use Accurate 5744 most of the time and it shoots real well. Around here the shops gouge us for this powder, but it is excellent with no position sensitivity.

I've talked with 45-70 shooters at the range and they say it works excellent for them also.

Range update: Shot the 425gr ranchdog bullet in my encore today. 40gr of 4198 (imr). Shot clover leaves at 50 yards. Recoil was bad, the encore is a light rifle in 45-70. Overall I was pleased with the performance and this should work well for Bear in Canada. Oh, no leading at all. barrel was clean when I got home. I think I would like to buy ranchdogs 350gr mold for deer in Oklahoma.
