Wow! That's nice. Always wanted to take a trip on a tug going up the river.
Good friend of mine worked the tugs for years, had all kinds of sea stories. Some of them even true. And he could really extend the truth.

When I was at sea, I always liked getting the weather report at sunset and dawn. "Red sky at night, sailor's delight. Red sky in morning sailor take warning."

Way more accurate than the weather guesser's.

Wolfdog....I'm way too long in the tooth to ever experience it now, but growing up on the Ohio River....man, I always wanted to ride the barges. Something so very nostalgic and real about it. Not gonna lie...I envy you in having that experience. I know it's hard work...I know it's time away from home, not discounting that. But I sure would love to ride with ya', my friend!

About 3 years ago met a Captain at the Bluegrass festival in Mountain View, AR. He had retired twice, had a tug named after him. Over 2 million miles with no accidents. Saw him again last month at the festival and he is still pushing tugs. Did not get his name, but he and his wife seemed to be real nice people.

When I was still working, one of my friends went to flight school on Boeing’s dime and learned to fly helicopters. Then he quit and went on to fly for a living, first as an oil rig ferry and now medivac. One of his small pleasures was sending glorious pictures from his “office” to my gray fabric box. Those of us in the box envy you wolfdog!

Memories of canoeing the entire MS river!

We were waiting to lock thru, barges backed up and they told us it would be 8 hours before we got thru... barge Captain overheard and invited us to stash out canoes on deck and take a break as we locked thru when he got his turn. He was last in line so we didn't really save much time but we got a ride down to the next lock and dam, had a warm meal, traded some stuff with the crew... and we put about 40 pounds of catfish in their freezer while we waited! They got some fresh fish for a couple meals and we got a badly needed rest and didn't have to fight one of the busiest river stretches in MN. Trust me, barge wakes and a canoe are "fun"! Paddle! HARDER! LOL Hastings to Red Wing can be really busy with grain barges filling, fertilizer barges going upstream...

If you have never seen a barge wake at water level... they can setup standing waves as they fight the current... if you paddle fast you can surf them!

Had a family member that invited the whole family for a short trip, Dad turned him down. Mom was maaaddd!!!!!

Beautiful pictures here on the great lakes the ships are often just spots on the horizon and I do not recall ever seeing a barge except for a work platform .
When I fished the great lakes I would often be out in the shipping lanes those big things where always given a wide berth when spotted coming.
