I took 43 lb of stick-on wheel weights added it to 14 lb of clip-on wheel weights which was then added to 28 lb of a homemade lyman number two alloy. I mixed it all together in this big pot melted it on top of my turkey fryer and then I threw in some paraffin wax and then I stirred up and scooped out all the dross.
The mirror finish is 700° at this point and weighs more than 80 lb. It takes a surprising amount of heat to melt such a heavy pot. I use a soup ladle to pour the metal into the Lyman ingot molds.
I'm excited I have not used softer alloy in a while. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231123/79da933ca2107820069c01708c3c36b8.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231123/6b9b9f5e737d89070168258b799577a6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231123/5dacdf5c814527ab1fbc9cabf7e7fa81.jpg

Cool.
Some folks use a metal or even brick/block shield around the sides of the cooker to channel the heat
up under the pot and not let so much go out & around it.
I like that setup. If I get to casting more, I'll have to do something like this..

The burner is from Ace hardware and the stainless steel stock pot is from Walmart.

These are some hollow point bullets that I cast out of the lead soup yesterday.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231124/e09524b3eaae3d37d89ded20675cdb8d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231124/7eea03eb4c1997ad39c62478e7a0b6f9.jpg

I used a welding blanket as a heat shield (think it was from HF). Worked great.

My buddy is a welder. He made up a bottom pour pot for melting scrap. It does about 40# at a pop, 10” dia pipe with a threaded, T handled bolt to open the bottom pour. I dont melt a lot of scrap now days, another buddy trades me pure leas ingots, but its a great tool on a turkey burner.

Some more hollow points cast from the yummy lead soup, these are from the MP311-140 sledgehammer bullet mold. They cast very easily with almost zero defects.
I want to powder coat, gas check, and start testing in my 308 WIN and 300 BLK rifles. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231206/d770fcdefc0eaba0eee55b6d8c601830.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231206/dfeaf3126fabb816014caceb681afb2b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231206/f35f4db484dfc6b3838631c8961c2332.jpg

Re the initial melt, I always start with a smaller amount then add to it, so the thermal shock is reduced. In addition, liquid lead transfers heat better than having pieces touching the pot in random places.
