Using cast 150-170gr....? Something pretty light for my wife to shoot (she likes to shoot a lot). Ive been using 4046 right now for fairly hot loads but assume there are better powders out there for much lighter loads, thanks guys :drinks:

for a light plinking load try 8gr unique with 170gr cast bullet should give a little over 1200 fps and light recoil

Agree with firebricker, 8 gr Unique or work up to 11 gr with the 170 gr cast bullet makes a comfortable, low recoil 30-30 load. Under the 311291 10 gr runs 1350 fps out of my M94 carbine and is a very accurate load for grouse out to 100 yards. If you want a real "plinking load" for your wife try the Hornady 90 gr .32 swaged SWC lead bullet (resized them to .311 for the 30-30 - no additional lube needed) over 3 gr of Bullseye for 800-850 fps. Very quiet and very accurate with no recoil to speak of. If you like that you can get the Lee TL314-90-SWC to cast your own. WARNING: you will be spending a lot of time loading these for your wife!

Try these. http://www.gmdr.com/lever/lowveldata.htm For plinking I like Red Dot(6.5gr), Green Dot(7.0gr), or Unique(7.0gr). I use the gmdr loads with 100-170 PB boolits.

Depending on how far you want to shoot, somewhere between 12-18 grs of 5744 should give you something plenty mild and accurate to boot.
The 18 grs shoots well enough with 180's out to 300 yds, to keep a 16 inch gong ringin.

Unique is also my powder of choice for plinking, and just saving money. I'm pretty much a steel gong ringer, and don't need to expend 30 grains of powder to hear that pleasnt CLANG.
Some folks suggest Trail Boss, but I found them to be wimpier than the Unique loads, but that may be a good thng in your case.
