I just went to the Midway site this morning. Reading the reviews of both I opted for the RCBS. No practical experience yet though.

You might want to try a Tel-Tru therometer 200-1000 F for approx. 20-25 dollars

you can get the same thermometer that RCBS uses without their logo from rotometals for a lot less.

IIRC both are made by Tel-True.

One of the folks that make Boolit Molds on CB has them for sale even cheaper. Same unit, same accuracy.

This one is $25 delivered:
http://www.kck.com/tel-tru_grill_smoker_thermometer.html

Scroll down to the part no. BBQ-TT-200-5-200/1000
The price is $19 + $6 shipping = $25
I got mine from them in about 3 or 4 days.

That Tel-Tru thermometer is the same one I use. $19 + shipping. I should've ordered a couple of 'em....

Anyone try the IR non-contact units. HF puts them on sale for $25-$30 about once a month.

They only measure surface temperature which can be different than the melt temp in the pot. Save your money

Plus they are calibrated for a black surface, not the reflective surface of molten lead.

Has anyone actually compared the readings on one of the commercial lead furnace thermometers with the readings of one of the IR non-contact units?

I have a Lyman. No problems. I had a $10 off cupon when I bought mine at Cabelas a few months ago, so I paid around $25 or so...
