That a 7mm BR cartridge. The barrel twist probably had a 16 - 18" twist +/- if I recall correctly.

The bench rest (BR) cartridges are specific for target shooting. The guys that are using these cartridges are usually putting in a lot more effort than the typical cast bullet shooter. I would suspect that they are also using rifles that are tailored for target match performance. This is not to say that you can't get groups that tight with other calibers, but you really have to work for it, and almost always at a lower velocity.

I had a XP100 7mm BR but it was before brass was available so l traded it away in my youthful ignorance…..and poverty….
If it would fit in an AR15, it would be the Next Big Thing.

Bad Ass Wallace: That's an impressive group. I've had similar performance shooting cast 7x57 loads with a sporterized VZ-24 Mauser. The RCBS 7-145-Sil shoots really good, but it's been my experience that the RCBS 7-168-Sp is even more accurate.

45workhorse: One of the biggest things that will get you tighter groups is weight sorting your cast bullets. Weigh the whole batch. You want the ones that are in the middle, average, and +/- 1 grain of each other. Those are going to be your accuracy bullets. The ones that are too heavy or too light, don't throw those back in the pot - those are your sight in and practice bullets.

My granddaughters 7MM-08 Savage Assis shot a ragged hole 5 shot group with Saeco #281 at 50 yards.
4198 with a 1 oz Dacron filler.

What I take from the original photo is the velocity of the bullet. Many can get accuracy like that with a bit of work at lower velocities. I agree with Larry that the twist rate is probably on the very slow side.

Notice that in Wolfdog's attached photo it says "enhanced" reclaimed shot. Both chilled and magnum shot contain trace amounts of arsenic. When you add even very small amounts of arsenic to a lead/antimony alloy it greatly improves the bullets hardness when heat treated. I've met some cast bullet benchrest shooters before and I can tell you that they are very meticulous in every aspect of both their ammunition and their firearms. To achieve that level of accuracy, at those velocities, you can bet that they are tailoring their alloy composition and heat treating process to deliver really hard bullets; much harder than regular cast loads would require.

On the other hand, I've also met 'single shot' benchrest shooters that use much lower velocities in (mostly exposed hammer falling blocks), and their bullets look to me to be soft 1-20 lead/tin alloy. I once met the guy that set a new world record in this sport: he shot a group about half the size of the one in Wolfdog's photo at 200 yards using a 25-20 cartridge. Benchrest guys are just on a different level.

A shooter at our range is one of those single shot BR shooters. Watched him shoot a 10 shot 0.4" group at 100yd with his .32 Borchardt action. Breech seated bullets. Vel was much less than 2000fps.

One of the 'best' 10 shot groups that I have ever shot was with my O3A3 (12x Leupold scope) 30.06 Springfield. Other than trimming to length, neck turning brass and unifying the primer pockets was nothing special, just a Lyman 311284 210gn cast boolit
