Need good load data for .300 Savage lever gun with 150 gr J words.

I have a cousin coming down tonight to get him started in loading .300 Savage, with 150 gr Hornady sp's. I am looking strongly at 3031 for powder, I have had extremely good luck with it in 30/30, .243, .308, 45/70 and 6.5x55. Any ideas?

IMR 3031 is a good choice for the 150gr bullet. I use IMR 4064 for the 165gr. Sierra. Varget would be a good choice as well.

I really liked Alliant 2000 MR and LeverEvolution for loads in the 300 Savage, with the 150 gr Hornady.
LeverEvolution gave me best groups by far w/ multiple bullets & weights, and I got book speeds (of other powders) w/ Very easy extraction.
2000 MR is SIMILAR in respects of max speeds at lower pressure.

Edit add: IMR 4895 & IMR 4320 seemed fine too. IMR 4064 gave some nice groups, but for me speed was off (low) by 100+ fps at acceptable extraction.

On a side note: I found the Hornady max charges a tad aggressive in my Savage M99.

3031 worked good for me in the .300 Savage with jacketed bullets in a 99 Savage and jacketed and cast in a 81 Remington.
I’d go with 31 grs for that 150 gr bullet.

3031 is a good match for the 300 Savage case capacity at 30-31 grains with a 150 grain J bullet. Since you have 3031, that is what I would use.

I have been running 44 grains of Varget, Federal 210M, 150 Nosler Partition in WW-Super brass. You may want to start at 41-42 grains. Depending on the manual this is a max or just over max load. Federal, Remington and trimmed LC 85 brass only allow 41-42 grains in my old, well used Savage 99 EG. Most groups under 1.5 MOA, some under 1 MOA, your results may vary. I have also used IMR 4064 with similar results, again 44 gr IMR 4064 is a MAX load in this old rifle, start around 40 grains, I used a CCI 200 primer. The IMR 4064 may be compressed, depending on bullet and magazine length, the older 2.6" or the 2.8" in the newer (1954? and later) production. Both IMR 4064 and Varget give 2700+ fps in MY rifle.

As an FYI to anybody that might be interested, .300 Savage data works great in .308. My two Axis .308's love 37 grains IMR 4895 under pretty much any 180 grain soft point. Feels more correct to use Savage data in them anyway!

When yer ready for some Grins...get some 71gr 32ACP FMJ, projectiles..over 10.0 Unique or 8.0 gr Red Dot they are Accurate and Capital F, Fun!!!!

42 grains of Varget with a Sierra 150 grain Gameking worked very well. Likewise, 42 grains of WW 748 did ok, but not as accurate as Varget. Which figures, because I have 8 pounds of 748 but only about a half of Varget and haven't seen any on the shelves for a while.

Hard to beat IMR 3031 I load it in .300 savage for my old Rem. Model 81 with 150 grain bullets it is very accurate .

Add AA2520 powder to all the others mentioned; it "measures" as easily as Win748.

I have shot a lot of 150 grain jacketed bullets out of my 300 Savage Model 99. I have one chronographed load with 3031 in my notes from way back when: they say 38 grains of 3031 gave me 2420 fps. I have nothing about how accurate the load was.
