Is there any difference, action or barrel wise, between the 336 and the 30A?

I believe the action and barrel for the 336 and the 30A are the same. It would not make sense to have two productions lines for these basic parts. The difference is that the 336 has a better polish job and a walnut stock. The 30A has a hardwood stock (not walnut). The style of the sights and barrel band may also vary. The 336 is a little better looking and cost more.

I have a 30A that I like very much. I like it even better because I got it at a good price. Get the rifle you like the best, either one will do the job for you. I like to tinker and I really like the look of the Marlin 24 inch barrel rifles. I bought the 30A at a time Marlin was not making 24 inch 30-30 rifles. I got a used 24 inch Marlin barrel and some parts for a short magazine and forend cap form Gun Parts Corp. and a walnut replacement stock (90% inletted) from Bishop stocks. A gunsmith put the barrel on for me and I fit the stock to the rifle and changed the magazine to 3/4 length. The result was a 24 inch 336A clone the shoots like a dream. It is now my favorite rifle. Marlin makes good rifles. You will like it no matter which one you get.
