A good way to buy a used gun safe

Our favorite niece & husband who live up there in the wild,
unexplored regions of the Oklahoma Territory got a deal on a gently used gun safe.
They'd been wanting one for awhile, but with 2 little kids, it never quite happened yet.

Her husband has a buddy who has a mid size Browning and is moving. The moving company won't touch it.
In an act of desperation, he sold it for $100.
Husband now has it in their closet, but the door is locked open, and the guy lost the combination.
They called us all excited and in a bit of a little panic.

I told 'em, "No problem. I'll mail ya a change key for the spin dial lock, a couple of anchor bolts,
and the right drill bit for them in the morning, then walk ya through how to reset the combination".

I figure the kids did good. They beat the system!
I looked up the Browning Silver Series safes, and they're big bucks.

Good for them. Although it sounds strange to me that a moving company won't move an empty safe.

Also tell them to check the combo at least three times before closing and locking the door.

If you have a safe with the door open and you don't know the combination. It is easy to figure out what it is. I have done it twice that I remember. Take the plate off that is covering the combination. If the combination has four numbers, there will be four brass plates with notches on them. Turn the dial until the plate with correct notch lines up with locking pin. Now turn the dial to the right l until the next plates lines up with locking pin. Now turn the dial to the right until the last plate lines up. This will free the handle on the door. Write the numbers down as you go thru the process. Most safes have a four; digit combination that starts with a turn to the left.

Kind of surprised me too, but most of them won't touch one, even if it's empty.
Most aren't much more difficult than moving a refrigerator, at least until they go over about 700 pounds.
Maybe it has to do with getting it in & out of a truck that doesn't have a lift gate, or concerns about stairs.
But a lot of the moving companies will tell ya to call a safe mover, and they get real expensive, real fast.

It's something I never thought about.
When we moved out of the city, the things I couldn't move myself,
I had all that done by a long time friend & neighbor that's also a safe mover.
It never dawned on me that otherwise I might have had a problem moving my 6,000 pound gun safe
I re-purposed from a old/retired bank vault.

Might need a specialist safe mover .........my brother was given a 10 ton bank safe ,all he had to do was move it .........no worries ....ring "Hector the Erector".....safe and grand piano mover.

Do what the FBI did, call the safe company for the default code. Once you have it open, change out the electronic lock for a mechanical one.

If its an expensive safe, call a licensed & bonded locksmith, and get out the credit card.
They may have to drill it if they can't get a override code.

If the safe won't cost much to replace, get out the hammer & chisel or sawz-all.

Moving companies refusing to move safes must be everywhere, my son bought and had delivered a good sized safe, one month later he's changing jobs and city, same thing, moving co. won't touch safe, he'll have to contact the person who delivered it to move it again.

I have moved across the country several times. Moving companies have never complained about my safes and they have been 800 - 900 pounds every time.

Last time I moved across country, I just left the old safe. Included it in the sale of the home.

It was cheaper to just do that and buy a new safe in the new location than it was to transport the old thing. In addition to the extra fees from the household mover due to the weight, I was going to have to pay a specialist safe mover to get it out of the basement. They wanted $250 plus $25/step.

Moved from SoCal to No Ore in 2020. Moving company had no problem moving an empty safe.

I had to use Safe City to move my safe, cost me $500, BUT, they knew what they were doing, and it was delivered in a refrigerator box. Very downlow. I considered it money well spent.
