Just acquired a 99 in 358 Win. As of now I do not have any moulds for a 35 cal boolitt. Anyone have any suggestions as there aren't many listed in the usual places. (Midway Cabelas BAC MidSouth)

You lucky dog you!!! That's one of my dream rifles and I doubt I'll ever find one. Try The RCBS 35-200FN. The Lyman 358315 is another 200 grainer but has a RN and the RCBS has a FN, I much prefer the RCBS. Also keep in mind any 38/357 peestol boolit will work too.

the rcbs 200 is probably good,i use the saeco 245 and with the snail mag on the savage might be a good one too.
i am able to push the saeco in my ruger till it hurts my shoulder.

Well, the Savage 99 goes without saying really. It's just about the finest lever action hunting rifle ever designed. I really can't think of anything that needs improvement when you have a choice among the various models. As for the 358 it's a very good all 'round medium game cartridge with readily available, long lasting brass, a good case capacity, and an adequate shoulder to headspace on. Add in the fact there are gazillions of 35 cal boolits and bullets to work with and you an see where a cast lover would desire this cartridge. Combine the 2 and add in low production numbers and high collector value and you have a very desirable rifle.

Moulds for this caliber/rifle combination are made of unobtanium, a banned substance which renders the rifle useless. Surrender it forthwith to my address.:)

Can you neck up 30-06 or .308 for this? I know the .358 is a .308 necked up, but can you use existing brass for the conversion?

You know, I liked the looks of the RCBS 200 FN also. Although, the guy I purchased the rifle from had 3 boxes of 250 gr Win Silvertip and a brand new bag of Rem 308 already necked up to .358, I have not found a readily supply of 358 brass available. But this should last me a while. Thanks for the input.

Moulds for this caliber/rifle combination are made of unobtanium,

I am starting to think that all the Mod 99 Savages were made out of unobtanium. I have not seen a reasonably priced 99 in years. Rifles that I would not have paid $100 for 20 years ago because they were too beat up and abused, are now selling for $1200, that is just crazy. My last trip to Tulsa, there was a fellow that had a 99F in a 308 win, that looked like it had been dragged behind the back of a pickup truck for a few miles, and he wanted $900 for it, and someone actually bought it. I am always looking for Mod 99's, a rifle 100 years ahead of it's time.

Best wishes from the Boer Ranch,

Joe

In Ken Waters Pet loads he gave up on cast bullet accuracy in a .358 /99 as he claimed the rifling was cut very shallow and did not get acceptable accuracy with cast offerings.Maybe you'll have better luck?Harold

Yeah, I wondered about that. I am going to use Glen Fryxells solution on Marlin micro groove barrels first. Cast them a little harder....a little oversize....and gas check 'em.

I had one and did and did not like - it mount well for a scope -- and you had to dead on for rounds to work --- being light in the muzzle --lot pf jump -- while I have shot cast out of my other .358 not os the M99--I have a tang model Ruger m-77 358 with 18.5" and 22"
' vanguard -- so the savage was different -- any way good luck --my best J bullet was a around 2" at 100 yards -- both of the bolt guns will beat that but on deer what is a .5"

Giz, I have a 99A Brush Gun in 358 Win. Slug the barrel and size accordingly and accuracy shouldn't be a problem. The moulds that I use are a Lee 158gr gas checked round nose flat point. Ranch Dog has a 190gr tumble lube mould that I'm still playing with but it shows great promise. I have a few more to try but haven't had time yet to play with them. I'm stocking up on toys to play with after retierment.
