If you make a wildcat cartridge from a cartridge by lowering the shoulder and trimming the neck shorter, What is the minimum length of neck you can use???

You can trim it as short as you'd like. However, you'll need sufficient neck length for bullet grip and you'll also want to consider how much the bullet protrudes into the powder area. Eating up valuable powder space with a bullets kinda sucks!

I like long necks...prolly why I'm such a fan of the 6mm Rem. It will also depend on the reamer design. Unless of course you're having a reamer made to your specs.

The minimum length of the neck should be no shorter than 1 caliber.

As an example, a .308 should have at least a length of .308 for sufficent tension.

There are cartridges that are shorter than 1 caliber and they will work, it's just a rule of thumb.

One caliber is said to be the rule of thumb. Then on the other hand, do a search on the 7supermag. It has been called the neckless wonder. A wildcat is just that, what ever you make it.

Well I have shortened a 7x39 FL sizing die to push the soulder back and then trimed the neck down. I was planning on buying a SKS barrel and shortening the chamber to match.
