Picture of some of Penns Premium Cast 370gr leads.
Now that Robert is gone, and I'm down to my last 500, any recommendations?
Pic also shows a Rem factory 510gr JSP from the early '80s and some Sierra 300gr JFN and JHPs. Bought back in the early '80s and I'm down to my last 100.

We hunt with fishing rods/reels in South Florida and the 458 is just for fun over the past four decades, as well as teaching those who have never fired one to learn.
Will start them with the 300gr and 4198, with 50-55gr LRMag primers, the up the loads to 60, 65, 70 and 70+. If they still want to keep going, I'll let them try the Rem 510gr.
No one has asked for a second one. :D

Tamiami range, long ago, would give me free range time in the tunnel and free 458 ammo for teaching some staff and customers how to shoot rifles of any caliber.

Don't know much other than how to load and shoot.
Was a member of the USAF smallbore team back in the last half of the '60s.
Paid attention and learned from the best, as well as making stocks for rifles and handguns.

Welcome aboard, RougeWave. I'll pipe in a little but, to be sure, others will as well. Lots of choices for you. Any of the cast bullets used in the very popular .45-70 will work just fine. The old Gov't standard 405 grain bullet should be a marvel in the .458 WM. Many make molds for that range bullet and they will all work well. If you want to start out on the economy side, Lee makes a 405 gr.'er mold that is suitable. See the headliner for the Lee site. Also, NOE & ACCURATE are mold companies that produce very fine molds. There are more, but those are three companies I frequent. Lyman has been in the business for a long time, too. Good luck.

Not planning on casting now, but at some point as the kids/grandkids live in the Rockies.
They have a Veterinary hospital as our boy's Mrs is the DVM.
He just cleans the animal poop and Skis. :D

I have a No.1V in 223 Rem with a 1:12 twist, bought used a few years ago, but haven't had a chance to ring it out. Have a Weaver T36 for that fun chore.

Will explain why the 458 has a 16.5 in barrel in a future post.

The very first Ruger #1 that I bought was a 1-H Tropical in 458 Winnie. I generally shoot it with the 462560, 550 grain, "Thors Hammer" boolit, but truth be told I have fed it with everything that my 45/70's shoot too.

Man-O-Man is that a neat looking rifle! I'm a big Ruger #1 lover & I got close to buying a 458 once. To this day still regret not buying it. I settled on a #1 in .45-70 instead & really enjoyed loading & shooting it. It was a joy to shoot with lighter cast bullets. Don't know if a 458 is as non-finicky as a .45-70 but my rifle dared me to find something that it wouldn't shoot good! Your rifle looks like the perfect medicine in case a rhino is raiding the garden!

I love my #1H in .458 but I punched mine out to .460 Weatherby Mag for even more fun!

I had shot one before and when I finally got my own .458 it was a cheap conversion to .460 WM.

I shoot two different cast bullets in it along with the full power jacketed stuff. The Lee 500 gr. and a NOE 360 gr. shoot real well at 45-70 velocities.

Way more south and not as east as Clifton. I am near Sierra Vista and that was at the SV range.
